Fuel Injector replacement questions

Just got back from a trusted mechanic who told me I have 2 bad fuel injectors. He wanted $225 labor to replace them. My money's a little tight right now so I think I'll probably replace them myself. Questions...
  • Do I just replace the 2 bad ones with used replacements or is it best to buy 6 new ones now?
  • Go for new, or are rebuilts ok?
  • Since Nissan is known for bad injectors, do I go factory OEM or aftermarket like Bosch or Venom? Recommended brands?
  • An older post mentioned replacing with injectors for a newer model since they had more streams. Anyone know more about this?
  • Best/cheap place to get injectors?
  • Does a Haynes manual give enough detail or should I get a factory service manual? Anyone able to scan a copy of the FSM page needed?
  • Any special tricks I would need to know that aren't covered in a Haynes manual?
  • I need injectors, plenum gasket... what else?
  • Can I still drive it for a little while without ruining something else?
I've never done anything like this on a car, but have rebuilt my motorcycle carb before so hopefully this won't be too difficult for me.

Thanks for the advice!

Okay.. First off, you can drive for awhile with bad injectors. I've done it for about 6 months with 3 bad ones and I was fine. No power, but I was fine. The bolts around the engine got a bit loose though, from all that seriose shaking, and the motor/tranny mounts are no good any more. Im guessing it's because of running those bad injectors for so long. But once I replaced all 6 injectors, engine ran like a charm.

Since your doing all that labor to get to the injectors, you do not wanna do that again for a long time so I really do urge you to go for the best money can buy.. From the dealer(their injectors are improved) . Don't waste your time/money on used crap because you really don't wanna do the job again. They are freakin expensive, which is why I couldn't afford them at the time. 100 bucks a pop. From what I hear, rebuilt injectors are garbage, and thats why Im recommending you the OEM injectors. Personally, I went for 6 Venom rebuilt injectors for 40 bucks a peice. Have been running them for about a year now with no problems. But thats just me.. Many people say, rebuilt go bad very soon.

Verdict: If your planning on keeping the car, go for OEM. If money's tight, go for 6 rebuilt, or 2 OEM but you never know when your old ones will give. Good luck.

it wont hurt anything to drive it with dead injectors

either replace them with used (cheapest) or new (expensive) dont bother with rebiult ones

all the new OEM injectors will be the updated version

if i were you i would think about how long your going to keep the car

if for a lot longer like 5 more years id replace all of them with NEW that way no more worries

if your going to get rid of it in a year just replace them with used chances are they will last but its still a chance plus theres a chance more of your originals could go bad

I got mine from Internetautomar and he hooked me up pretty good with new injectors (Bosch). I have not had any problems with them for a couple months now.

Hmm... not too sure why you would get scratched cylinder walls because of no fire... The oil galleys would still function properly (bring out to the cylinder walls via the piston). The build up of gas residue is not healthy - but should lead to scratching.

I had a problem in my number 4 cylinder (engine #1) after replacing a faulty injector after being dead for 1-2 years (it wasn't being driven much). Once I replaced the injector - it ran well for about a half hour and then started missing again.

I ran a compression check - 80psi - "Houston, we have a problem."

Removal of the head revealed an out of round condition for the piston. I think the ring gave way when it had fire for the first time in many days. The ring got weak or brittle with hot summer heat, cold winters, etc. But, then again - it could have been a fluke.

the gas also acts a lubricant and coolant for the cylinder

not to mention broken manifold studs...That was my major fear and the reason why I grounded my car when 1 injector went bad.
