Okay, before I start, I'll admit - I know virtually nothing about cars. I know how to start it, how to stop it, and how to drive it, and a few other inbetween things... but that's about the extent of my mechanical aptitude. Anyway, on to the meat of the question -

During the colder winter months (and apparently, now as well), my digital display will not light up right away - for example, tonight, it did not light up at all during a 10-15 minute drive home from work. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? It's very annoying to drive down the interstate and have no idea how fast I'm going, how much fuel I have, etc, etc...

Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, that's typical with any LCD display.. All the faceplates of my stereos have done that, and my laptop does that after I drive to school on really cold mornings.
the problem is that the liquid crystal in the display gets cold and either freezes or gets very close to freezing.. thus it will move veyr slowly or not at all. In english, that means it'll barely show up and change really slowly, or it won't show up at all until the thing warms up.

As for a fix, I don't know of anything that will work other than replacing it.. for what you're doing, I doubt if you want to shell out that kind of $$. a gauge cluster isn't exactly cheap (you may be able to get one from a junkyard for $50-100). if you do that, I can assist you with instructions on removing the old one and replacing it with the "new" one. I saw several gauge clusters on MAxes at the junkyard yesterday- both white and black.. I'll check prices on them tomorrow when I go back.

Soooo for the time being, you can just turn the heater on high and do whatever possible to warm up the display quicker, you can live with the problem, you can replace the gauges with analog, OR hopefully Kaleb will have a fix for you.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I'll wait and see what Kaleb has to say, and if he can't give me a fix, then I guess I'll look into replacing parts.

Okay, so tonight on the way home, the display actually lit up (yay!). Of course, it was after nearly 20 minutes with the heater running full-force... So, kaleb, any suggestions?

Converting to (Analog) sp?

From what I was told you can't convert the digital dash to analog it would require alot of mods including the computer. As for ShaunC's problem it is common where I'm from where the temperatures can go to -38 C. Matt93GXE is right that it happends to most LCD display units when they get old, and from experience of seeing what happends to this kind of problem afterwards you may want to consider changing the actual display (the dash unit) which will run you mega$$$. What usually happends is the problem starts out like this then eventually gets worse and worse till the dash won't light up any more because the liquid crystals freez so much that they get dammaged and the LCD won't work. I hope that this doen't happen to you but I've seen it happen on more than one Max before at the shop I work at. If Kaleb finds a better solution I would sure like to hear it (I have the same digital dash).
Ryan.
