The ticking time bomb just went off....

Well Im TRYING to drive my soon to be parts car, which is a VG 5 speed, daily but its not letting me!

When I got it, the fans didnt work. I hard wired them to the battery, because even changing the relays didnt help. I just pop the hood, connect fans and drive.

So Its been eating a little oil, since both valve covers are leaking a good bit of oil, as is the front crank seal. but not too much.

And some times its hard to start. Twice Ive stalled it and it needed 30sec worth of cranking and working the gas pedal. I thought that was due to oil pressure but I think the pump is going out. normaly (like after sitting for 4-8hr) its starts right up, no problem.

So I take my friend for a ride, who might buy it, and it started pouring white smoke out the back. Im like great its burning oil. So i high tail it home and shut the car off and its ok. The more I rev'd it the more smoke.

This morning it started up as usual but I turned it right off. Sigh this cars possed. Some times (before it smoked) it would be a rocket, some times it'd miss, and it always had a high (1200-2K) or rough idle. Figured a tune up would take care of that, but I wouldnt have it that long.

So is the engine burning coolant (blown head gasket- yay...) or oil? And how long to fix either problem, estimated. I dont want to put too much work in it, as I want to get working on clearing out my 1st parts car so i can do my 5 speed swap and drive my good max. untill then I can drive my slow s10.

without knowing exactly what's wrong, I can't really tell you.

I can swap an engine in a weekend though... if you've got a bad head gasket, honestly it'll be almost easier to just swap the engine.

White smoke = steam = compromised water jacket = probable head gasket.

I know where there's a 91,000 mile VG engine in the Seacoast area of NH for $200.

The fans are only supposed to work when the engine can't hold its temperature. My fans have only ever turned on once since i got the car 7 months ago. Depending on where you live, this is normal. If you have the fans on all the time, this just means that your car will take longer to warm up and struggle to stay warm when the weather is cold.

Yeh white smoke sound like a head gasket to me.

well white smoke can also be a leaking injector, smell the smoke, if its sweet then its coolant, if not its probably a bad injector.

Your max is suffering from common gremlins, and needs some TLC.

I couldnt care less, its just my parts car. I bought it for the 5 speed tranny, the over all condition of the car sucks. It'd take alot to make it a good car. Ive got another 90 max thats in great shape, thats the one thats getting the manual. I just wanted to drive this for a while as i could abuse it w/o worry. So I'll just drive my s10 till the swaps done.
