professional service stress

i can't stand having another party do work on my car. i usually do all work and maintainance myself but my employer has an incentive program and they give coupons for oil changes and today got 2 new tires installed from firestone. i hate giving someone my car key and car for 2 hours. it goes without saying why i don't want someone else driving my car, but they could also take the key somewhere and make a duplicate. me being the newbie car care customer gave them my home address, and handed over all my keys instead of just taking the car key off. then of course after the fact i start to think about how ****ed over i could be. basically, now, i'm going to have to change the locks to the house for peace of mind. can't trust anyone in this world...

Settle down beavis.......

Millions of people every day get there cars serviced without any problems....

Aside from having 3 million dollars worth of stereo equipment in it i would say your car is pretty much safe....

I know where your comin from. Just work on the car yourself, and leave it at that. Then no worries.

I think he was referring to the fact that he gave them more than just his car keys, he gave them ALL his keys (including home I assume)
that is reason for his worry

*****Please take no offense, I'm in the same boat****
Ya but if your driving an old Max, what would give a potential thief the idea that your worth robbing???

I agree with the flock here, settle down, relax, all will be good. I would worry more about some moron forgetting to check for a double gasket on the oil filter, or forgetting to replace the oil, or mabye filling your car up with window washer fluid instead of oil. I managed a Jiffy Lube for awhile, I have seen it all.

it barely has anything to do with the car and is easially replaceable, of course i would rather just keep mine and not worry about insurance settlements and buying a new car. mostly, i was just pissed at myself for giving my address and house keys. i keep up to date too much with the (bad) news. all the id theft and meth scams. it's true most people aren't a threat, but i shouldn't be stupid and give people my keys and address. some things in a house aren't replacable. nice to be off my donut and on brand new tires though.. 80,000 mile warranty too

Something you can do to ease your mind is when you take your car in for service, just give them only the car key.

And only the burgundy one, not the black one! Unless they have to work on the glove box and trunk.

Being paranoid doesn't necessarily mean that there is NOT someone out to get you!
Personally I wouldn't p!ss on a Firestone service center if they were on fire.

next time give them just your car key(s) only...also don't leave the car at the shop...wait for it.

if you have items in your home that's of value then maybe it's a good idea to install a safe.

Are the burgundy and black keys different? My black one is really worn out and the burgundy one is like new so I use the burgundy one all the time. Is there a difference?

exaclty my point. the whole situation made me uneasy. i gave them my home address, car key and house key. i don't know why they need my address anyway, i better get some coupons in the mail or something. but shouldn't have given it or my house keys away in the first place. at least i'll have suspects in mind if anything happens. you live and learn i guess.

hunter: i feel the same way, course it was free tires and service. i don't know how firestone is even in business anymore. hopefully the tires stay in one peice

I guess I should be most paranoid, I bought the car without any original keys . And even better, the key I have is the valet. I really hope nothing happens to my elec. trunk opener on the side of the door.

You can always open the trunk by removing the rear seat and crawling in there. The glove box is much more tricky.

actually thats not so far - fetched. my friend had her suzuki crotch rocket jacked out of her driveway. the police are certain its someone at a shop she took it to, they duplicate the key, keep your address, come by and drive it off. this theft ring in my area all gets traced back to this one shop, currently under investigation. thats why i have six pounds of C4 strapped to the block, with a remote detonator.

Call me up when you detonate it, I'm sure it'll be worth the drive. Although I'm not so sure how close I'll need to be with 6lbs

Much more effective than lo-jack

Now I'm worried. My mechainc (Firestone) is right across the street from my house. Sure Ive used him for about 15 years but he knows where I live and he may come and get me. Now that I think about it the old lady (great coverup granny, Im on to you) only gave me one key when I bought the car from her. She may have others, and she knows what her car looks like and might come and get me while I sleep. Oh no! Great, now I have so much to worry about. I better go put my tin foil hat back on!

By the way, anyone can walk by smash any window on your house and get into it. Unless you live in a concrete house with no windows, like I do.

Now I feel better the tin hat is back on!

Mine is the total opposite. My black key only works in the ignition while the burgundy works on the doors and trunk, but no ignition. I have another separate key strictly for the glovebox, which is neither black nor burgundy, but it works in the ignition too. Its very complicated because the ignition got messed up a long time ago and had to be replaced.

Haha gotta love worn out locks! Never tried the glovebox but it certainly opens the trunk OK! Since my black key is so worn, i should probably get a duplicate before it gets any more morn out.

Well if you all think thats weird, check this out.. My GXE key opens my SE, but my SE key can't open the GXE. So basically, I could have came to my current SE back when it was owned by someone else, and jacked it. What a small world.

So should I be on the look out for 3rd gen owners, or what? Don't tell me we can all open each others doors.

Back when I was a valet parker and morons would lock the keys in the door, we would try a key of the same make, not even model, and sometimes, not very often, but sometimes the key would work with some jiggling. Great now I just worried myself some more! Xanax is my friend

So why does that happen? Manufacturers are too lazy to make all different keys?

The keys might be slightly close to the others, Im not sure. I guess there's only so many combos before there are repeats.
