Try going into third before going into reverse, see if that helps any. Don't know if it'll work on these cars but it does on old volvo's with bad synchros.

If this problem is while clutch pedal pressed, points to synchro ---> tranny drop & repair, expensive.

Before that, change clutch fluid and make sure it disengages. If no good, change gearbox oil; phasta knows better from his volvos what kinda poisons to add in... I suggest just to fill with full synthetic engine oil [surpasses nissan gearbox req].
If still no good: start lookin for spare box...

yeah definatly check the clutch so it engages 100%, someone said not a week ago that adjusting a bolt by the clutch pedal helped him get passed this problem.

...or change fluid to the Redline MTL which I did. It didn't take away the noises completely but it did help some. maybe in your case it'll work though since you don't seem to have that much problems. expensive oil but it's not the first time ppl have said it's done wonders.

but in the end, be it sooner or later, you'd need to change synchros.

This is just something for you to think about (FYI). I had the 5spd from my VE rebuilt last week. New synchros, bearings, races, and seals. The pro that rebuilt it required that I use 20w-50 motor oil in the transmission. He even made this a term of my warranty. As in no 20w-50, no warranty.

He says that the synchros in our transmission require a certain amount of friction to work properly and that synthetics cannot provide this. He said that synthetic fluid will lead to premature wear.

I haven't actually driven the car with the new tranny & fluid. Waiting on a CV axle. But for what it is worth, Matt93SE agrees with my rebuilder and says that he has been told the same thing over the years.

Good luck with your tranny. I would get it fixed before it leaves you stranded in the middle of BFE.

So how can ppl know what to use as there are as many trannypros x100.000 as there are oils available? --> Check out the oil classification the manufacturer requires [Max manual tranny: API GL-4*2], then compare oils and demand that they fulfill -or- surpass those requirements. (seek the net for edu)

Note: In maxima case, the oil requirements are from end of 70's... Possibly there has been 'some' lubrication development since then.

Things depend also how u use your vehicle: if youre living in *,**,,**,**,,* -freezelocation, tar is no good.

actually the manual trans recommended oil is a API GL-3 one. And that doesn't exist any longer... as far as I know. Go with what others have tested, I say.

Dunno where u get tHat?. Such does not exist even in FSM.

--->FSM page MA-7: API GL-4*2

Btw. Classifications do not vanish: use smtg which fills this FSM spec -or- better. Anybody interested can educate oneself via net what is better... (But what is sure, is that I dont know; tHereby I rely on given specs.)

One way is to ignore internet experts.

...and rely the guy in the mirror, THE instant expert... Well, even experts err, remebering one system where factory experts had recommended wrong lubrication causing disaster. The Truth comes never cheap.

My 80k experience, recommended by real expert, which I also can recommend, is Mobil full synthetic motor oil into a nissan manual box.

dragon_m:
Its the synchro [if your clutch works ok, check that]. The oil issue was if u could lessen your problem with better oil or additives: Phasta & other ppl have made suggestions which could hlp u for few yrs, seek out forum...
