ok, i basically beat the hell out of this car...and i know i cant, but this car is so fun to drive....it is an automatic...today i noticed that sometimes it takes longer to shift into 2nd gear all the others are fine.... is this a problem starting to arise, or is this normal, i didnt notice it before, and my A\T swtich is on automatic.

start saving your money, and try to find a donar 5speed if u can. Sounds like ur in the early stages of tranny wipeout. You may get another 10,000 miles though. I think its kinda hard to tell, but it is definately not "normal" as u were asking

I highly suggest NOT doing a fluid change, unless this tranny has been flushed on a regular basis. you may do more damage by flushing, and those trans fixes in a bottle wont "fixit" maybe they will buy you some time, maybe not. Back me up on the flush issue guys.

edit; too late i see, sorry.

no more swapping of fluids of any kind ANYMORE,. LOL and he is right, if the fluid was NEVER changed, the seals get used to the fluid. when new fluid is introduced, you will have problems down the road, TRUST ME, ask my parents LOL

My car does EXACTLY the same thing! There was a day a month ago at my place where there was snow everywhere and it was the first time it has snowed since 1986 which is before I was born! I gave the car the caining of it's life doin redline burnouts on the ice etc. etc. and now it gets completely stuck in 2nd until it's completely warmed up then it changes from 2nd to 3rd really strangely from then.

Did you end up finding a solution to your problem?

Me too!!!!!

About two months ago I let my now ex-boyfriend give my '93 Maxima SE an oil change. He gave the car back and told me he changed my transmission fluid and filter. As soon as I got it back I told him it was revving unusually high. He thought there was too much fluid so the dumbass cyphened some out. I drove over 1000 miles before another friend told me my fluid was so low it wasn't even registering. I have an automatic but it won't shift out of 1st. I can only go up to 20mph. I took it to the shop and they said at best $1500 to take it out and rebuild. That's more than I paid for my pimp mobile. I can't afford that. There's got to be another way.

Actually, I would flush it. My old g/f had a VG auto with 184k miles on it. Took in to have the oil changed and they found the tranny fluid was burnt. Flushed it, refilled it. Car ran fine for many miles after that.

Also, put a cooler on your tranny! I put one on my VG auto when I bought in February of 2001 @ ~110k miles. The car now has ~185k miles and it still shifts just fine. I also drained and refilled the tranny about every 3 oil changes. Probably overkill but mine still works and believe me, that car has seen some abuse over the years.

Some will probably flame me for this, but it does help to nurse the car a bit now, taking off at red light like a racer with an autotragic doesn't help the tranny much.

I think the biggest problem with the automatics is the way they are driven....Flogging the car like your dale jr. at bristol does nothing but shorten the lifespan of the tranny...If your driving style is like that of a nascar driver....Then be prepared to pay for it...........One tranny at a time.

Every time the tranny fluid is changed it needs to be checked frequently for a while after driving it. The body holds so much more than the pan that just draining it and filling it sometimes leaves it low. Check it properly (warmed up well, go through the gears, idling in park) before you get drastic.

The primary reason that automatic transmissions fail is heat. Extended hard driving leads to very high operating temps which breaks down your tranny fluid . This forms varnish, hardens your seals, and damages the clutches inside the transmission. This makes the tranny start to slip more when changing gears and this leads to more heat. Starts getting circular after a while.

As I said previously in this thread, the solution is a freakin external cooler! Mine is used in addition the heat exchanger in the radiator. I am telling you, I beat the shit out of my VG auto for the last 4 years and my transmission, even at 185k miles, still works just fine.

Keep redlining it, and you won't get very far with it. Also, if you have almost no money to repair the car and only enough for gas, I would really suggest you don't drive it that way. Things will go bad. Keep driving it that way, be prepared to ask mom/dad for some cash, or not drive the car. Your tranny is tryin to let you know to take it easy. These trannies really can't take much of a beating.

Before swappin A/T, swap the 'The primary reason' -phrase with: 'one primary reason' and check electronics.

When the minuscle electrons fail to report duty at solenoids, A/T is ALSO gonna fail, warm or cold. And heat kills also TCU: every 10F increase halves lifetime.
