Do you get better mileage with better gas or is just good for the car?

Took me a little under a quarter of a tank to get from Redmond to Kent which is about 25miles or so (NWers will know about this). I went through a lot of gas and I was going around 70mph the whole time. As I watched my gas gauge go down on my way, I was thinking, "I woner if you get better gas with better gas stations and or the type of gas like Premium and up?" What do you guys think?

The way I understand it premium gas won't help your mileage if you don't need it. Also alcohol in the gas will definitely give worse gas mileage.

well where was your gauge at, because if im at full tank and use 1/4 tank its looks like ill get like 600 miles on the tank, but when its at 1/4 tank itll go down quicker looking like i wont get very far.

as far as gas, use 87, paying more and using higher octane wont due squat for you unless you set your car up for it. but yes some gas stations you might find some illegal activity like watering down gas and such. i remember youve never got good gas mileage, did you fix that before??

Your gas mileage mostly depends on your driving habits...[i.e jackrabbit starts{me guilty},7.200rpm before next gear change{jeff},lots of stop and go city driving, getting gas in new orleans area]

Tuning it up might help.

I dunno about VG guys but I definitely get by far the best gas mileage using 93 octane. More specifically I get incredibly better mileage with Chevron 93 octane.

I can't afford the gas at 3.70 a gallon here so i am forced to use regular in my VG Power max!

Your car takes regular I thought

Better brands used to mean better additive packages (and premium octane used to contain more detergents to entice people to buy it). Not sure if that's the case anymore. With prices so high, I've relaxed my standards for buying gas a bit. No 'generic' brands, but I'll buy Hess or Getty if they are significantly cheaper (used to be a Mobil/Exxon/Sunoco only guy).

I am not sure about the VG, but the VE is set up to run higher octane gas. You can run lower grade, but the ECU will retard your timing and hurt performance.

I haven't put 87 in my Maxima, but my wife filled our VQ powered Infiniti with 87 in (which is set up for 91+ octane) and it got poorer gas mileage and pinged some on hard acceleration. She drove it about 1/2 tank before I got into it. We went on a trip to Portland (that's when I realized it was pinging and asked her if she put in super), so it was almost down to empty. It got about 14 mpg for the 3/4 or so it used. Normally, it averages about 18 mpg mixed driving.

Yea...My ve will clack like an old detroit deisel if i don't use 93 octane..My timing is advanced +5degrees...But on the lighter side it has 285,000 miles on it and still gets about 28mpg....highway around 18 city.

um not sure bout your altitude and what not but 87 is what i run and i run it fine.

as far as watering down goes, idiots will do anything, and i mean anything, they may not necessarily water it down, but youd be putting water in your tank if they put water in the resevoirs.

Agreed!!

So what do you guys suggest for the best type of gas you VGers would go with, maybe you VEers would know.....I'm seeing 91 - 93 octance
A VG'r should be fine with any grade gas......

A worn out motor won't get good gas mileage no matter what. Is your's worn out?

And since you never took the time/money to do a proper tune up, it's not suprising your mileage is doo-doo. Then again "1/4 of a tank" is hardly a good judgement as the floats in these cars don't seem to be very linear.
