Are complete one way mirror tints illegal?

Hello folks,

Just have one question. I just bought a roll of commercial quality residential "one way mirror" tint for our front door. I just applied it (didn't realize how easy it was!).

I now have alot of this stuff left over, and I just did the window regulators on my maxima (all four doors). I replaced them with used part that doesn't have the reinforcement, so I've ordered new regulators.

Anyway, I was wondering if it is illegal to apply my one-way mirror tint on the maxima? The only law I know of is that in NJ, driver's and passenger's front glass cannot be tinted, but no limit on tints for rear windshield and rear side glass...

But I've never seen any cars with one-way mirror tints, except for those that have the 1/2 mirror, 1/2 black tint... Is it because it is illegal to have all-mirror?

The tint looks pretty nice. It's not shiny mirror, but it's got a deep black-slightly dull chrome look to it. I thought it wouldn't look all that bad on the charcoal grey max.

Only problem I see is blinding oncoming drivers or drivers in the rear from the reflection of the sun...

Just get in touch with the local police in your area and ask one of them about the local tint laws in your area ....tint laws vary by city and state...

You live in New Jersey, so all tinting on the front windows and windshield are illegal, yep it sucks. i had to swap windows out of my cars back and forth to get them both through inspection (my gxe has tint, se does not)

most states have a max percentage on the tint and none allow the windshield. texas is a 35% tint but the last time we were discussing this, some said their state was around 20%.

the reason front tint is illegal is because it's dangerous!
think about it from the cops point of view: You pull over a car but can't see inside of it, how the he|| are you going to know if the guy has a gun pulled and ready to kill you or not?

or how about the fact that tint reduces nightime visibility SIGNIFICANTLY??

there's enough morons on the road who can barely drive to begin with, I'd like them to at least have a chance of seeing where they're going.
it's the same punks who drive at night with their headlights on and smoked light covers so they are totally USELESS!!!!
these cars should be impounded and sold. enough of this crap with unsafe cars in the name of self expression.
People have the right to live and see oncoming cars well before they hit the dumba$$ head on cause he felt looking cool was more important than being safe

Well, I'm not trying to tint for looks and I do not need limo tint. I just happened to have tint sitting around. I have a baby and although she's only 18 months and can't speak, she HATES getting in the maxima (no tint). The '01 pathfinder has factory tint and she will be fine when we put her in the pathfinder. She will fuss and then low whine when she rides in the maxima. Now that I'm a parent, I notice other folks on the road have similar problems. Most people have temporary static cling tints on their rear windows (and/or baby window shades).

Furthermore, it kinda sucks to see sun-bleached seat back tops. I think I may get some 35% (or even more VLT) and just do B-pillar and back...

Anyone know how to do dry-shrink using baby power? I have one question. After the shrinking, how do you clean up the power?

How on Earth winshield tint is going to hinder cop's view of a driver if they always pull behind the cars they stop?

The more tint on the windows, the darker the inside of the car is....I for one agree with him...Simply because of the safety issue of tint at night....I had a 88 supra with extremely dark tint already on it when i bought it...it was the first car i ever had with tint on it...And the last....To safely back up at night i had to roll down the window or open the the damn door so i could see....

But to be a police officer walking up to a car with dark tint at night.... .....I would definantly have my finger real close to the trigger, hoping i don't die today because i could not see the bussiness end of a gun pointed at me......I think tint should be illegal period for that reason alone....

There are too many idiots my age doing stupid and pointless stuff like this and endangering everyone. Tint is pointless. Want a theft deterrant? make an ignition cut!

Actually some state troopers in NJ pull INFRONT of the car they pull over, and they approach the car from the passenger side. I think this is supposed to be the actual way a cop is supposed to pull you over in NJ. Most pull up behind you because it would make the strobe lights of the policecar more visible (to be at the back of the car). I think because they are supposed to pull up infront of you, it is illegal for NJ cars to have tint on windshield or front glass.

Speaking of tint being dangerous for cops, it seems that only the cops in NJ who go around driving with limo tint all around their windows. I guess if you are a cop you don't get penalized. There is a middle eastern family living across the street from our house, and they have a relative who visits every few days and he's a jersey city cop. the entire family drive around in cars that have limo tint all around and middle eastern letter decals on the rear windshield. I hope I don't sound racist (nor am I trying to be) but at this day and age, I can't understand why a middle eastern person would want to drive around in a car with jet black windows and with white middle eastern letters on the rear windshield. Maybe that's the key, I doubt no cop would be stupid enough to pull over a car that looks like that...

Personally, I think limo tint is stupid, but the tint I have on my 2001 Pathfinder, I do not mind at all (I think someone said it's 35% Visible Light Transmittance, but it seems lighter). I wouldn't even mind it a bit lighter. Even with this factory tint on the pathfinder, I have no problem seeing out the back at night. I did try driving a borrowed car from a repair shop and this car had some ridiculous tint on it and yes, at night, it's was very stupid.

I think it would actually be safer for cops if NJ changes the law to maximum of 50% VLT tint, allowed everywhere except windshield. With the current law, even 5%VLT (limo tint) is allowed on the rear windshield and rear windows, just no tint on front of the car. With this, there could be some guy with a gun pulled out sitting on the back of an escalade with limo tints all behind b-pillar.

Anyway, I just wanted some tint so that my child doesn't get bothered by the rays of the sun (like most parents). Because of the ridiculous tinting law in NJ (average people are surprised when they walk into a tint shop and are told that they can tint everywhere except front windows), I think lot of people do not get tinting no matter how light it is.

And then they go buy almost opaque black static cling patches and patch them all over the rear of the car. I have a feeling that this is more dangerous than light tint...

Anyway, I think we've beaten the post to a pulp already.

So why not abolish tint laws and force people to open their windows when pulled over? If I was tinted, and a cop pulled me over the first thing I would do is open my window.

Why would someone wait until the cop is knocking on the window to open it?

I guess that would make a cops job harder then it really is. Imagine what he has to go through everytime somebody says they forgot they had tints?

1. because it's friggin' cold outside, and they'd like to keep themselves warm
2. because it's friggin' hot outside, and they'd like to keep themselves cool
3. because it's friggin' raining outside, and they'd like to keep themselves dry

and as we have said before, tint reduces outward visibility as well, which increases the possibility of not being able to see that moron driving without his headlights on because he thinks the street lights are good enough.

ok we have beaten this to death.

Pyro...IMO..don't use that tint. go to a tint shop...get the rear two doors tinted and the back glass tinted. your child won't be bothered with the sun. get something like 30% or even 50% and you'll be fine.
