steering rack replacement check list

I will need to get my steering rack fix, so I will need some help from those that have done so already:

Besides from the new rack, what other parts do I need?

Do I have to grease anything before putting the new rack in?

Also, since removing my y pipe is NOT an option, any advice on how to get to the bolts that holds the steer rack in place?

If you gurus can thing of anything else, please post as well, I will need all the advice I can get.

Thanks.

remove your Y pipe, whatever it costs to get it off. pulling the rack is a ROYAL PITA if you don't.

nonetheless, be sure to get new bellows boots (dust boots), the square lockwasher thingies that hold the inner tie rods on, and steering rack mount bushings.
also need a quart or two of fluid.

if you don't want to pull the Y pipe, getting to the bolts is going to be a MAJOR PITA, but that's your perogative.. have fun trying to cram your arms and a 19mm ratchet in there.

shouldn't the new rack comes with the new inner tie rod + square lockwasher thingies + bellow boot?

The reason I can't pull my Y is that there are a few busted exhaust stud, looks like now is a good time to get them done also.

for that, I do have the part numbers, just don't know how much to buy, can anyone chime in on that?

Thanks alot matt for your input.

the Y pipe doesn't have anything to do with the manifold studs.

the new rack may or may not come with that stuff.. I've only bought used ones, so I can't tell you. be prepared to buy that stuff if it doesn't come with it.

for the Y-pipe and manifold studs, my fears is that since these studs are so weak, and the bolts that holds the y pipe and header end pipe together are pretty much fused togther, that and the bolts at the cat (I think they're original), removing the bolts that holds the Y pipe in place might induce stress to the already weakened manifold studs, breaking off what ever that is left.
