having trouble replacing axles

I am having trouble fitting the driver side axle into place. Its the same thing as the one i took out, so i know i have the right one. When i seat it into the transmission and try to get it through the rotor, it stops short and doesnt seat completely against the back of the rotor (or whatever it sits against i dont remember). I tried tightening the nut on the end of the axle to try to pull it through the rotor, but it just pulls the other end out of the tranny. The axle does have some play in it when you pull on both ends to compensate for suspension movement, but it just goes back together. Any suggestions?

Are the driveshaft splines lined up with the splines in the hub??

You might have a piece trash inside the hub stopping it from seating correctly.

got any pics???

You have to jam that new axle in place. It needs to snap into place. Make sure that the end that goes into the tranny has that little metal ring on it. If it doesn't, then it has no way to stay in.

I bet you aren't pushing it into the tranny hard enough. Jam it in place, then pull on it slightly to see if it falls out. If it doesn't, then bolt it all up and you're done.

And like, Mygreenmax said, make sure the splines are lined up. It shouldn't be that hard to line them up. It just falls into place, then after that, jam it in there really hard.

Ya everything was lined up right and no trash. I looked at the axles again and found that the ring on the end that goes into the tranny was smaller on the new one, so i just switched them. Thanks for the input guys

Looks like it's pullin a honda on you....Take it out the hub. Then PB blast both the hub splines and the ones on the axle...wipe clean...LIGHTLY WD40 the axle splines and that should do the trick.

I got it together, the little ring on the end that goes into the tranny was too small so it just kept popping out. So i put the old one on it and it works now.

How much did you pay for a front axle? My 92 GXE just got into a nasty side-swipe, and I need a new rear axle, along with at lease a rear door and quarter panel. It's a sad day in this man's life.

You must have been in the moutains in NC. I don't think I've seen too much red clay like that anywhere but the moutain region of NC.

the rear suspension is comprised of several easily replaceable parts.
Heck on my old max I had 2 bent arms on the rear but it was perfectly aligned and had no problems that ever cropped up. I was surprised when I saw the bent pieces

yeah, but if it has been in a major collision, is it plausible to fix it?

IMO, to rebuild a crushed up rearend of any car you need access to more then just basic handtools and more then basic repairing skills...If you don't have either of the 2,i wouldn't attempt it...

It would be easier to me to just buy another car then to try and fix a crushed rear end...These cars are on every street corner, some of them for sale cheap....

the extent of the damage will be what decides whether you can easily fix it or not.

and a smashed up GXE ain't worth much.
I only got offered $450 for my VE5 that is hit in the rear, no frame damage

Well, it's a 92 GXE, Beige/champegne....whatever you want to call it. 178k miles, and it got hit in the rear passenger. It was towed from the scene, I then drove it home(with the suspension in bad shape), but now it's sat there for quite a while...no time. The rear quarter panel needs replaced, along with the tail-light, and rear passenger door. Everything else is in quite wonderful shape, minus normal wear and a dent on the front driver side. Just changed the plugs and oil before it was in this unfortunate state. Let me know if you need more info, Hectic.
