New VE A/T - Some questions

Well I just bought my 5th Maxima. Its a 93 Maxima SE Auto. Has all the goodies except leather, 152K Miles, new struts/axles. Needs a door, which I have and it even happens to be the same color! Price - $350

Heres why;
The tranny is posessed. I hopped in the car, started it up, and It wouldn't rev past 2k. However when it drives, it has almost no performance at first, but as soon as the revs get up there, it has power just fine.

Only seems to be shifting through two gears, probably either 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th from the feel of it. Fellow said car drove fine with tons of power before tranny problems arose, and did have good service records. He is a friend of my grandparents, so I believe his story.

Also, car seems to want to drive in every gear,
Park - car doesnt move, but wont let me rev. Probably engaging something
Revers, no reverse, car does not move at all
Neutral, D, 1, 2, - Car drives and shifts between two gears, no matter what position it is in.

I bought it planning on doing a 5spd swap, but, is there any chance this is something simple like a bad lever linkage or something? Car does not slip when in gear.

Let me know any advice/info you may have!
