HELP with gas mileage

I get real bad gas mileage on my ve, 14.7 mpg on the last tank . I just replaced the knock sensor (I didn't replace the wire harness, but I checked it and cleaned it), and the O2 sensor. I was replacing my VTCs, so I did all that stuff at the same time. I gonna check my timingf today and run the codes, see if it tells me anything. Anybody has any ideas???

Maybe a injector or 2 are stuck open....How is it running??

If there is one stuck open then you will have pretty strong gas smell from the tailpipe..

It runs good, I'll check for the smell. Would that show up as a code?

One might be stuck open just enough to dump extra fuel, but not enough for it to run rough...
OBD1 ecu,s are pretty much useless for codes...Especially on the maxima...

You can buy a automotive s***hoscope and listen to the injectors clicking while it is running....Or a screwdriver to the injector and the other end on your ear works good too...

Edit: the*** is t e t..Stupid lauguage filter

Well I know on my 89 Max when I bought it I had a bad gas smell from the rear end and ended up being the Vent tube for the gas tank 3.00 or less to replace. I also just found a gas leak under the hood today on a crossover on the fuel rail. With the car running you might want to check the fuel lines under the hood. Just follow them and if you have a leak you will see it.

My 89 is having the same problems. When i put gas into the car you can smell it near the rear of the car and today i was looking under the hood and i saw gas leaking only around the #1 injector. Btw the vent tube is the samething as the filler tube right?

No it runs along the side of the filler tube. The peice that needs to be replaced is at the tank under the car and I bet that after you fill up the car all the way you can look under it and see drips of gas falliong on the ground. I can't remember what size the line was but if you can take it off and have someone take you to the parts store they will hook you up. It is a pain in the rear to get to but you will notice an increase in gas mileage. But beware that are you get the system to pressurize you might find other leaks under the hood like I did...

What do you mean by a tune up? I'll check the timing tomorow, need to find my timing gun in the storage. I changed the spark plugs when I changed the VTCs. Changed all the fluids, and even cleaned the trottle body. What else do they do when they do tune up? Never had one done before. Think it's way too much money just to check the timing & to change spark plugs. I'll change the fuel filter tomorow, too, just in case.
How do I listen to injectors on the back, though, will I be able to reach them?

Basic tune up as in plugs, PCV valve, and fuel filter.. Since you said you changed the O2 and knock sensor, I don't see why you shouldn't have great gas mileage unless you have a leak somewhere. Also depends on how hard you drive.

That's the thing, I try not to drive hard. I drove my vg maxima much harder and got a lot better mileage. My Talon had 660cc injectors and I got better gas mileage. I gonna go through the whole fuel system tomorow, see if I can find something. I had a lick on that line between the rails, but I could smell that stuff right away. I think if there was a lick, I woud';ve noticed it. And you have to admit, you'd have to drive it pretty hard to get 14.7 mph

Yeah, it's at about 750-800 rpm, it's slightly goes up & down, hardly noticable, may be just 10-15 rpm every second or so.
