weird problem

well i just got a VE guage cluster from the junk yard...i just installed it and put everything back together...IT WORKS PERFECTLY....well the guage does.....i took the key out of the ignition...and my CD player, clock, and aftermarket guages are still on.........hmmm....... so i took it back apart and put the old one back in....same thing...so i just put the new one in for now.....you know when you turn your key to the "accessory" setting (first click)...well it seems like that my key is on the accessory, but it is really pulled out of the ignition.......what is causing this???????? i checked fuses and stuff.. all ok.......any ideas.....im gonna disconnect the negative therminal for now, but anybody know what i did????? i didnt smell any burning or anything..the car starts and runs fine also... so i dunno

well since there is no 5 speeds around me ( i dont want them shipped) there is a VE automatic in a junk yard with 68,666 miles on it ( i took the cluster out of it) but tthe thing that bothers me is that it wasnt hit..so either the tranny is blown or the engine...i have no way to tell.....it is $60 for the tranny (u-pull it yourself)...........so it is either a VE auto (68,666 miles) or a VG 5 speed (280,000 miles) what do u guys think... i want a 5 speed, but there arent many around me and i dont want one shipped and i need my car like right now......

I'd do the VE A/T tranny after hotwiring the car to start. that way you'll know if it's in there for a possible engine problem or something else.
there is a fairly good chance it's there due to VTC noise. it can easily be confused with rod knock by the untrained ear.

I'd look for a wire shorting out to another wire.

what you should do is put the old cluster in and see if that fixes the problem, and if it does, then you know you got a bum cluster, in which case you could try to swap out just the speedo's, and hopefully that would work ;-)
