I almost died..well not really but could've (pix inside)

One day last week after fishtailing on the highway, I noticed a thumping sound coming from my front passenger side tire...I inspected the tire visually (not the rim) and seemed fine but I went ahead to transfer it to the rear and when I got my + thing to remove the lugs I put it in the hole to see which size would be the right one, when I saw that it was empty and I could spin it..so I decided to look in the hole and there was no lug nut or stud there were 2 studs missing out of 5 so I got one of my honda's lugs and through it in until I could get to the shop, when I got there the man told me I need 3 studs not 2 cuz one was real stripped so there ya go he put 3 new studs and charged me 35 bucks..I gave him 40 since the shop was closed when I called him and he waited for me. Wish he would've changed all for new ones but he only ordered 3 and his distributor was also closed by that time. Well the moral of the story is dont let a newb overtorque your nuts.

I could've gotten seriously injured cuz I was driving on the highway before I knew what was making the noise..well enough blah, here's some pics

wow. how does overtorquing break lug studs?

No clue but thats what the guy at the shop said.. more stress/tension? probably

Overtorquing lug nuts can cause studs to stretch, strip,
and eventually break. Lugs will be stripped as well.
Rotors warp too. And of course the car rides worse then
if they were torqued to specs.

you fortunate bastid , drive for awhile and listen for metal rubbing sound, your wheel bearing might be in danger. I had a couple of loose nuts on my last car, drove it for awhile before realizing what was up, when all was said and done, my wheel bearing was shot to hell, and made all kind of noise, not a fun experience indeed.

speaking of rotors I will be needing some..so internetautomart better have those 2 front brembo rotors ready for when I have the money..my $$ usually goes fast

my front wheels wobble when the front nuts are torqued too much. I thought my rotors were warped, since it was wobbling kind of bad. I had tightened the bolts myself without a torque wrench. Later, I bought a torque wrench and put them each at 90 lb. ft. No more wobbles.

I also found that it isn't too hard to strip/break/cross thread the nuts onto the studs. Be very careful. I have cross threaded two with an impact gun and snapped one off. Now, I take my time and hand tighten each nut, then use a tire iron and a torque wrench.

Definatly had em ready for me. They work great along with some metal master pads.

Looks scary but nothing deadly. I saw a wheel separating from the front driver side of a 88 Camry. It was noisy, but the car still stopped safely and on the straight line. The longest time it took the driver to run and catch the wheel...

i remember when my wheel fell off just as i got off the highway...the wheel was still rolling away by the time my car came to a stop and i got out. that was tight.

when I got my 5 speed parts car it was my DD for a few days while my s10s registration came in. On my way home one day from work I was cruiseing at like 60 (didnt trust the car since It was owned and worked on by a shady looking dude) and then my drivers wheel came off. It darted to the left, crossed 2 lanes of traffic and hit the divider and stopped.

my car took 3/4 of a mile to stop (e brake sucked and didnt think to pull it, and i didnt car about the car any way) and I was fine. pretty scary with that nice 60mph thump hitting asphalt and not knowing WTF is happening. Turns out that mexican over tourqed all 5 lug nuts. 1 snapped other 4 striped

I got a flat fixed last week and am now noticing that the car "feels" different when driving. Is 90lb. the standard spec for the lug nuts?
Is there a brand or type of torque wrench that is recommended?

torque depends on the car. Im not sure about 3rd gens, but its usually around 75-85 ftlbs. Any type of torque wrench will work as long as its calibrated and pretty accurate.

90 ft-lb. is okay, but Nissan recommends ??-??(don't remember exactly) so I just found the number in the middle of the 2 recommended and it was 80, so I just use 80 ft-lbs. each time. Feels great.

one thing about tightening lug nuts is that you do not want to tighten them in a circular pattern. tighten a nut, then go across to the other side (180 degrees) and tighten and keep going back and forth. by going in a circular pattern, you will increase the chance of having a warped rim. the bigger the diameter of the wheel, the more noticable it will be. you may see a big trucks maintained by back alley mechanics going down the road with a wobbling wheel.

Cuz thats who owned it before me. the car only had 1 tranny mount, a rigged up starter switch, flat black paint job, drivers rear door, front and rear quarter panals in nearly pure bondo, drivers door and hood in flaking off flat black and the rest of the car flat black, super ****ty tires, and bad injectors. It was a pos with a good tranny and brand new clutch so I bought it. Plus it deserved to be put out of its misery, Id hate for some one to try to make it a daily driver.

my wheel fell of too the lugs just came right off of the studs, the studs were all stripped. and i remember torquing it to spec. i guess i hadnt a few times before or something. im lucky no one got hit by my AWOL wheel that flew into the next to lanes over.
