manifold cleaning

Ok i plan on porting my intake manifolds(spares thanks to mrgone) within the next 2 week and i was wondering what be be the best way to clean them before i do it, they have all the buildup inside that you would expect from a 13 year old car so i was thinking soaking them would be the best idea( i dont have access to a parts cleaner) but i'm not sure in what, anybody have any ideas? i wasnt sure if seafoam or simplegreen would be suitable or if i should just spray a couple of cans of engine cleaner in there or if i should even bother and just leave them dirty, thanks. i'll try to post pics later tonight to show how dirty they are.

3 or 4 cans of the $1 carb cleaner at idiotzone should take most of the crap off of it..

Or you could throw it in the dishwasher with a sh!tload of cascade..

wire brush and a bottle of castrol super clean.

if you're going to port...do you know what you're doing? do you have a flow bench? or access to one?

Brake parts cleaner evaporates really fast so you would go through a lot to try and cut the heavy stuff. I like to use carb dip but it's $100 for 5 gallons and you can't use it on plastic and rubber. The upper intake probably wouldn't fit in the can either, the lower will. I would try simple green or a purple cleaner but make sure you rinse all that stuff off because it will corrode aluminum if you let it sit too long.

Is ther a trany shop in your area (or machine shop with a cold tank)? they would have a aluminum parts washer. You could see how much they would want to clean it for you it would be a lot better the a home cleaning

i would think cleaning is a non-issuse of u're going to port them....the porting is gonna remove a lot more than just the build up inside.

maybe i misunderstood

If you're taking the heads out to a machine shop to port them, why not have them clean it?

hey guys thanks for all your suggestions, i'll try cleaning it myself and if that doesn't work i could feasibly use a parts cleaner but it would be more of a hassle.

I've read up quite a bit on it and i know there is probably noway i'm going to get it perfect but since it is a spare set of manifolds i am not terribly worried about it, my goal is just going to be to uniformly increase the size of everything, if i was serious about this i would have a shop do it for me with the flow bench and do the heads also. also i am seriously looking into doing a 5spd swap this summer( if i can find a 5spd ) and if that comes to fruition i will swap out the manifold with the one from the 5spd.

I would clean before porting because all that gunk can clog up the sandy paper thingys if you use them.

I'd say soak the manifold in a Castrol Super Clean dilute atleast overnight. you could probably clean them sparkly-like with a toothbrush after the superclean does what it can. That is some harsh stuff.

CRC Green cleans stuff up very nicely and isn't too harsh.

Just find it on sale for 99 cents a can and buy the whole rack
