Radiator fans?????

Radiator fans?????
I have problem now. About a day ago my fans for the radiator stayed on for a long time when I cranked it up in the am, then they just went off.
I am starting to see my temp needle get higher than usual at idle speed, so I changed out the temp control unit after troubleshooting the wiring, all the fuses looked good. My fans are not working at idle speed and this is when I see the slight increase in temp. If I turn the AC on the fans work properly, they are just not functioning at idle speed. How long should it be before they turn on at idle speed?, and could this be an indication of another problem?
Thanks for the help in advance....

I'm having a simular problem with my 89. While it is running at anytime the fans will just run and not shut off? The temp will not even bump up with the weather being cold right now. So yes any help here would be great.

i believe the fans on transversely mounted engines (front wheel drives), are controlled by a thermostat. meaning that they don't necessarily go on when idling - they should go on at a specific temp or when certain accessories are on (like the AC)

Cooling fans
I have been having a problem with my alternator lately so i thought. While troubleshooting my alternator i turned on an off lots of components with a volt meter clipped on the alt. I turned on the A/C with the temp control on the cool then turned off the A/C switch. Then i slid the temp control to the heat setting and noticed the fans were still on and drawing alot of volts . Maybe some of you out there are experiencing the same problem with your fans?

Ok,
So what you are saying is that the fans are probably controlled by the T-Stat which means that if the fans are not working correctly the T-Stat could be faulty. That makes sense in my case, I am going to replace my T-Stat today.

correction on the thermostat....not sure why i said t-stat in the first place....in any case, i'm pretty sure it is NOT the t-stat. the t-stat just controls coolant flow. it provides no other electrical feedback to the computer to turn the fans on or off. more probable is that the fans are controlled by some other sensor that feeds into the computer - specifically and engine coolant temp sensor (not that familiar with nissan motors so it may be called something else).
if ur engine is not overheating while in operation (and the car is moving), i see no reason to go through the teardown of swapping out t-stats.

Yeah, running there is no problem, just at idle speed it runs hot. Coolant head temp sensor is what I am hearing, but I am also going to check the WP belt, I do here a squeal in the am, that goes away suddenly. I won't bother the T-Stat until I check the rest. Thanks for your replies......

Sorry, for the late reply. Just got around to fixing. It was indeed the coolant temp sensor. Located by the bypass hose next to the fire wall side of the engine. Took me about 20 minutes to do. No more over-heating. Thanks for your help....

i would have told u this in the beginnin' but unfortunately i just came across ur thread today. the Coolant Temp. Sensor (CTS) controls ur fans comin' on and off. if ur fans don't come on at all then all u have to do is just unplug the CTS and they will come on automatically and stay on until the CTS is replaced.i forget what does it mean if ur fans stay on while the CTS is plugged in. what u should also do is clean the connector if it has any rust cuz this also affects ur cold starts and gas mileage from what i heard.

CnR's 90 max, please don't clutter the message boards with messages that amount to just an attempt to get your post count up. It annoys others. I wish moderators were here to see this. I think a
would probably be in order. oh well

it is probably your coolant temp sensor. Costs about $20 and takes maybe 10 minutes to replace.
you can check the ECU for codes and it will probably throw a code 13

Wifes car.
The coolant temp reads fine. I would think that the one fan should go on when the motor gets hot and it does. The other one should only go on when the AC is switched on? Both go on no mater what when the heater fan is switched on in the cab.
