Failed Emissoins, just passed!

Hey guys, long time no post here, been busy lately but now I have something to post =)

Well when I got my car I never asked the previous owner about emissions on the max but I guess I found out when I got a good look when I ran the carfax showing that it failed 6 times in the cars lifetime. I took the car to get tested on the 17th cuz I got the paper from the secretary of state....ding ding the results were "Fail" and that was for having 2.08 readings on hydrocarbons...so I went got a new "cadillac" converter and went to get the maxima tested today and BAM passed right away, didnt even have to wait 5 min of testing cuz it took like 20 seconds to pass..

Now the question is...I dont know if the O2 sensor is dead, I wanna replace it anyway but right now I dont have the money. If the o2 in fact is bad will it mess up my cat and is there a way to test the o2?

PS, I tried editting typo on title but couldn't, yes I know its Emissions.

That's good... Mine would fail with flying colors. I started her up today (1st time in 3 months) Battery was almost dead. I think I have a leaking seal, cause that baby blew out a bunch of blue smoke.

Let her sit for about 30 mins, then took her around the blocks a few times. Boy I sure do miss the sound of that Ravin Exhaust. Then when she was nice and warmed up, I took her down to the interstate to clear out the cobwebs. She still has it though, I passed this Civic that pulled behind me and got on my butt. Downshifted to 2nd and was gone... poor civic couldn't even keep up.

Is there a way to find out if the O2 sensor in fact needs to be replaced?

Uumm, probably but I don't know how. How is your fuel economy? If it's really bad, you may have your answer.

MPG have been rather low in the past month or so...today when I went to get gas I calculated what I got previously and it was 17.5 with some aggressive driving..I'm used to getting about 18-19 and the most i've gotten is 24 mpg highway/city mixed. I guess 17.5 isnt too bad for having a heavy foot.. any other ways to find out?

If you've never replaced it, then its definitly bad. You can get 10-15% increase in fuel economy with a new one.

there is a simple diagnostic mode, that gives a real-time read out on the 02 sensors performance.

My 94 Maxima passed the test, but it recently had its O2 sensor replaced (like a year or two ago). Also, this is the Atlanta emissions test. Don't know what area you are.
