What happend after braking?

Well on the way home from work last night some moron infront of me slamed on is brakes at a new yellow light. I in turn did the same thing locking up my brakes and sliding around 20 feet (wet pavement). well after the light changed the exceleration was realy slugish for the rest of the drive home. An hour after getting home my wife and I whent to a potluck dinner (yummy) and the engine light was on for around 2 minutes. After the light whent off the exceleration is better than it's been in 2 years. What happend?
Oh yea and while the engine light was on the power switch light was flashing.

sounds almost like the car (trans actually) went into safe mode. I knoe Aaron had a similar problem after doing burn outs. not shure why braking would do that though.
