detonation, help!!!

tonight i pulled one of my coilpacks to check for cracks, as someone said that may be why im losing power......well i decided it wasnt so difficult to change the spark plugs, so i changed them. From NGK-R spark plugs, that are old as sin, to OBX-R Iridium plugs, that are new. after gapping them to .44, and adding anti-seize lube to the threads, i put the coilpacks back in, bolted them down, etc. then started it. BAM right off the bat, i have a cylinder not firing....so i do my best to find the problem. I take each connector off the coilpacks one by one to see which one causes NO change in the sound. I found the one that was bad, it was the rear middle one. So i diagnosed it down to the connector, one of the three male connectors was bent out of place, so it wasnt making a connection (the E node.)

Well, i start it up again....it sounded great, back to normal. I was saved. Well, i took it down the road to se how it ran, and at about 2500 RPMs, it cuts out, kinda like if you ran the engine with the MAF disconnected....you know how it sounds like you're fuel/air mixture is out of whack. Well, i pulled back in my driveway to check it out....i turn the engine off ,check all the cylinders again, check the connections....everythings fine. So i turn the car back on, and it just sounds like bloody A$$ at a high idle. sound like one cylinder is constantly misfiring or something......detonating, or backfiring.

someone help!!!! im not gonna drive it liek this, and my 240 has expired tags, and im not gettting a ticket on the way to work tomorrow

ok, i decided to try the old spark plugs again......even though the gaps were ALL screwed up.... .44, .50, .56, .45, .50, .51 (even though theyre said to need to be at .44........ well it runs fine now, any idea why my OBX iridiums might have been doing that?

1. NEVER USE ANYTHING BUT NGK PLUGS IN A NISSAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. the proper gap for the plugs is 0.039" - 0.043". your gap is too big. probably making the matters much worse. re-gap the plugs to 0.041 instead of 0.044 and I bet a lot of your problem will go away.

3. refer to #1.

I had a Nissan tech tell me that plugs other than NGK (he cited Bosch specifically) can cause problems with the coil packs. He said they basically spike the system and can cause the electronic system (ECU) to shut down for a split second. It won't show codes or CEL, either. He had several instances where the coil packs were no longer good and he was fairly certain it was from the Bosch plugs. He didn't say if it was gap related or not, just plug related.

I would suggest just buying NGK plugs, either platinum or copper.

dunno whose they were reboxing....but the ceramic o nteh plug itself said OBX-R.....just like the NGK's i just got (NGK Iridium IX) have the Iridium IX imprinted on it, was very professional, so im not so sure that they were reboxed....but i dunno! i don't doubt you guys, especially matt and automaR

but yeah, bought some iridium IX from advance riceracing today, and put them in, was quick because of last nights constant in and out, in and out, spark plug problems, but it runs great now, thanks guys

possibly, toss some NGK coppers in there for the moment and see if it runs better.

I'm feeling like Jeffy Dohmer right now....maybe this is why my max was surging with the acceleration before I left...at times i could floor the pedal and the car would just start chugging bad like the engine wasn't firing correctly. What's crazy though is I ran the Bosch 4's for a few years with no problems and then when i did a plug change...all went to hell!!

Drive your max to the wrecking yard and make use of their crushing machine.
