I was driving down a local street yesterday in my '93 GXE (auto transmission). The tranny's going from 2nd to 3rd gear, and it CLUNKS real fast, then neutrals out RPMing, i'm not getting anywhere and am coasting on what speed i had already. Soooo as i'm pulling to a side street, everything starts working again. so i take the max into the AAMCO shop today, and everything's fine on the way there, i'm going about 75 smoothly. Thennnn i park but have to back up to park it so they can move it into the garage, and THUD it clunks again. NOw i can't go in reverse. The people at AAMCO say it could be the teeth on my universal gear (??)(i'm not very tech savvy when it comes to cars). Anyway, i don't want to get screwed over because i don't know a great deal about cars. I'm having a diagnostic check done later today and need any advice/ideas as to what this could be and what it's gonna run me, price-wise. Thanks in advance
Brian

well......

It could be a varitey of things really. I'm thinking it is your transmission. It could also be your timing belt, but if you don't hear like a whining noise then you should be okay. If I had to bet on it, I would say it is in your transmission. The price of this is hard to tell until you know the exact problem. It could be something huge & then again it could be something little. I would take it to an auto shop & see what they say. Then I would take it to your local Nissan dealership & get thier opinion. That way you can compare the two & see what is goin on. That is just what i would do if I were in your shoes. Good Luck

Sounds like.....

Reverse cluth pack to me....usually the first one to go when the auto trans kicks the bucket!(or at least thats what happen to mine) I hate to scare you, but it might be rebuild time...get your wallet ready! but if you're saying you can't go in reverse at all, I'm 99.9% sure your tranny is shot! Look to spend anywhere form $1500+ for a rebuild and $50 for a cooler...good luck, I hope this ISN'T the case though!

really screwed

we're talkin 1800 for the overhaul, plus hard parts, so ~$2500. Damn. It was the tranny. Any alternatives that are less costly?

You should take it to an auto shop & get an estimate then to your local Nissan dealership like I said before. This way you can go the cheapest route. You are screwed, there isn't really any other way around this. You only option here is to show the money.........good luck

Well.....

you can buy a used trans swap it in! Its should cost less than a full rebuild, but the only prob I see with that is the chance of that one kicking the bucket too...check places like copartfinder.com, car-part.com for some used trannys. I know Matt93gxe has a used trans from his wrecked car and JustinMC might still have one from his old GXE as well.

personally I'd go with a FULL rebuild with a warranty, you'll have a lot more confidence knowing that if something goes wrong its under warranty! and if you do go for a rebuild ask about adding on a trans cooler and possibly a Transgo shiftkit(which will lengthen the trans life), what part of the country are you in?? this has happen to a lot of us on here and I bet someone on here thats lives in your area can direct you towards a good deal. good luck!!

On a financial note

If you are still paying off the car through a finance company, they will often increase the loan amount and work it in to your monthly payment amount. You wouldn't feel as much of a squeeze.
Or, if that's not the case and you own the car outright, you still might be able to secure a short term loan. Just try to stay away from using a credit card unless it is the only resource you have, then it takes forever to pay off.

Just some thoughts.

Go with a tranny rebuild and a warranty. I bought my 5 year old Maxima with a $1500 warranty, which was worked into the cost of the loan for the car. About 6 months later my tranny and engine went, along with some other parts. About $4200. Iw as glad I got the warranty.

Warranties can be your friend. I mean, I wouldn't get one on anything new, but when dealing with older stuff, they become vital.

Good Luck!
