I'd appreciate if any of you could help me on this. I plan on putting the synthetic ATF in my 1990 VG by myself. But I understand that when drained only 1/3 of the old ATF comes out. so when I put in the synthetic it'll mix with the 2/3 regular ATF left in the engine. Does that cause any problem? or is there some better way to change to synthetic? thanks a lot.

You can go to a quick lube place and get it almost all replaced. Cost about 80 dollars. Mixing? Dunno.

 

And yes, I saw that you wanted to do it by yourself, but if you want to get more of it out, you 'll probably have to go to the lube place.

 

Thanks medicsonic. There's no quicklube in my area, PA. I wonder if special tools needed to do the job, can any auto shop do it?

well, still Id like to do it myself so the question remains unanswered. can regular and synthetic ATF be mixed? thanks

Yes, they can be mixed however you don't get the full benefit without putting in as much Synthetic as possible. Make sure they are both the same type (e.g., Dextron III).
