valve tapping???

this motor only has 69,000 miles on it and when it is cold i hear a slight valve tapping.... thats what myu dad said also... but could it be my VTC's????? it is coming from the drivers side towards the front of the car, near that cylinder bank.... and when you rev it higher, it follows the RPM level... i have never heard another VE with the VTC noise, so i dunno what it sounds like, but it is only when it is cold..HELP!

VTC noise will come from the right side. Does it go away when the car gets warm? If so, it sounds like an exhaust manifold leak.

Most likely the VTC's.. Sorry vans. That engine layin around in the junkyard for long periods of time..... Who knows what the previose owner did to it...... You redlining at every light... I wouldn't be surprised if you were attacked by something worse than that. VTCs should be the least of your worries since they can be kept quite for long periods of time till you can get around to rebuilding/replacing them. The power is still there.

yeah the power is still there, but on some days it feels like it isnt, but then it isnt ticking... when i first start it up after sitting all night, i can smoke the tires right out of my driveway... when it is warm, i cannot... anyone know why? knock sensor maybe?

vans do u live around cherry hill? well its kinda 2 late now but i used to go to cherry hill every weekend and i have clicking VTC's not all the time. just a tought if u wanted to hear what a clicking VE sounds like. loud and annoying. mines been clicking for around 2 years and dont notice much. but i do change the oil as soon as i hear the clicking and i also add that lucas oil stabilizer to it and it gets rid of it. hehe.

i had the same problem with my 92 SE

thought it was the VTCs till i grounded them

soo i thought it was valve ticking

popped both valve covers off and still not the problem

ended up being my timing chain hitting

soo im in the process of replaceing my timing chain and all that good stuff

dunno what to tell you man

just hope it isnt as bad as mine was

Very good that your replacing it. Don't put it off, because thats the noise people hear before the chains pop.

The chains are designed to "outlive the engine", but note that the tensioners are not. I personally don't have much experience on the Maxima timing chain/tensioners, but on the 240 i know they were a problem. More so than the chain itself atleast.

but the noise is coming from the other side of the motor (i think the rear of the motor its called where the tranny is hooked up to) right around there towards the ffront of the car, is where i hear the ticking

ticking

If it sounds like its coming from the rear (by the battery and air cleaner, it might be something else. I could think of possibly an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold. These car's are famous for that. Listen carefully to the click. An exhaust leak sounds very much like a tick. But upon closer listening, it you can make out a very quick Pssst, not click.

vans try one of them Ste thoscopes(close the space in the middle this thing keeps on blocking the 3 letters) things for the cars. it looks simillar to the ones the doctors use except the car one is just a stick instead of the around metal thing. place the stick on places where u think the sound is comming from and listen for the viabrations i guess. the louder the sound u hear move it closer to a certain point. and well u know where i am going with this. just an idea. mite help u find the location tho.

this thing.
