First of all... . My 3rd gen is toast. I have a hole in the engine exposing the timing chain. This happened while I was driving, but I didnt hear anything. It just gradually lost power and shut off ...twice. The second time it woudnt start back up. I just changed the oil last night too. OUCH!! Just bought a body kit and muffler and LED spoiler.
I had it towed to my buddy's house, and he's offering me $2000 for it. I just dont know. I found an engine on Ebay last night for $525 plus shipping with 51k on it(guess thats gone now!).

Damn, that sucks dude. For a car with that much work on it, I'd definately look at keeping it alive, though.
Any idea what caused it? Inquiring minds want to know... (whatever it was, I'm replacing mine... can't afford to blow my car up.)

jeez. I don't know what I'd do. I'm pretty much not going to do major mods to the car from here on out, but if my engine went yesterday, I'd think twice before fixing it. Maybe it would be the elusive VQ swap.

The engine has about 126k on it. It all started with this http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=447927

yeah 2500 is a LOT for a blown motor car. I paid $450 for my VE5...granted its not as nice as yours is (or has as many mods) but it has a WSP "Y", RSTB, FSTB, Sprints, Tokicos, recent clutch, leather, addco RSB and other little extras. I basically bought a lot of mods and got a car with them lol. When I am finished with it...well it will be worth much more than $450 .
I am not sure I would take the $2500 either but you have to think about what you have in it and how much more you need to put into it to get it running again.
If you spend another 1K on the car you can have your old familiar car (which you may or may not love) and be happy. If you sell your car for $2500 will you be able to buy another car as nice as yours for $3500 (the 2500 plus 1K you would have spent on the motor)?
Just something to think about...sometimes taking the money isnt always the answer.

Timing Chain Cover Hole of Death
From what you said in your earlier post about running out of oil and with this result I'd say this engine is toast. This car's worth $1000-4000. If you can get a decent engine for under $1000 and install it yourself, your ahead of the game. If it costs you over $1500 for the engine and installation, you'd be ahead to sell it for $2500. It all depends on what you feel the rest of the car is worth to you. Good Luck.

Well Im going to sell it to him and get an 02 6 speed blk on blk. I was going to get the new max and try to keep the 3rd gen but this changed everything today. I know the max will be taken care of as if I still had it. Ive had the catback for a long time now, I was just waiting for a 03 muffler.

Didn't think so.
Its not worth the $2500, I'd take that and run like hell.

I keep thinking about selling my Maxima, but I was trying to think of what car I could get into for about the same amount of money and I only came up with two things: DSM turbo or Fox body Mustang. The DSM is not high on my reliability list and the Stangs are usually pretty ratty.

The engine that came out of my 92 had a hole in the timing cover from the front VTC cover breaking off. I chose not to fool with that engine because all the sprockets etc. got chewed up and then the possibilty of bent valves. I paid $305 for the car and it was in fairly decent shape.

Well, I will swap out the engine and see how I feel then. I'll make up my mind then to keep or not. Dont get me wrong now, I do LOVE this car and have no prob sayin so. Been real good to me. But I was kinda lookin for an excuse to get the 2003 manual. I had planned on buying air ride, black paint job, some new shoes, and tokico's to finish this joint. I dont even know what it sounds like with intake -catback. It's just too early to quit...I think! Thanks for all the compliments, I thought most of yall 3rd genners didnt like my style.
