Engine Condition
You will always be taking a gamble with a used engine unless you personaly know the previous owner and how he/she took care of the engine...
Best thing to do is get the lowest mile engine for the $$ you have and hope for the best...And whatever you do, DO NOT buy a engine from a junkyard without some kind of warranty on it..
Being your a vg motor, replace the timing belt,tensioner/water pump. before you install it...

yeah definitely run a compression check or ask the people you buy the engine from if they have the results...prior to buyin it of course...
of course, the lower the mileage, most likely the better condition
And just like GreenMax said...do all the maintanence stuff (ie. timing belt, water pump, and depending on how many miles on your tranny..a converter seal might not be a bad thing to do while the engine is out of the car, and check manifold studs as well) while the engine is out...cause its much easier while its out.....

I would just go ahead and upgrade the exhaust studs with the engine out and be done with it. I always would do the T-belts, front seals, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and rear main seal as well as the tune up stuff.
