Sunroof Problems

Over the weekend I tilted up the sunroof on my 96 Max and heard a loudish pop. I think the cable broke. The motor still seems to work (it whirs away normally without moving anything). However in its current condition the sunroof will not close (lift up to roof level) on the side to the rear of the car. Instead it drops about .75 inches below roof level. The sunroof repair kit (part number 91350-40u20) has been discontinued and is sold out everywhere. I do not really need to fix the sunroof (I can live without it opening) but obviously I need to get it to close. Any ideas? Is there any way to close it manually? I would hate to have to ditch the car which is solid as a rock just because I can't close the sunroof.

I've seen people wedge a piece of wood in there or some old socks to keep the sunroof up.

There's always the jy route.

Sunroof Problems

Wow, never thought that sunroof repair kit would be discontinued.

That sucks. I was just thinking of buying it for my Infiniti.

Removing the sunroof is a pain in the ***. I took my 2000 and 2003 Maxima sunroofs out. Those two are totally different. The 2000 is just like the 4th gen. But mine was rusted out beyond repair.

I was thinking about taking the headliner out and screwing/fixing the sunroof in the closed position. Then reassemble with the wiring unconnected to disable the controls. At least then I could drive the car. Does anyone have any experience with these sunroofs - is this possible/would this work?

I have never gone the junk yard route. Is the buyer (me) responsible for removing the part from the donor car?

do you buy any chance know how to take the headliner off or have a video or any sort of tutorial on how to do so? because I am in a similar situation (my sunroof can't tilt up or down)

If you dont wanna damage your headliner. Take back window out so you can slide it out easily. Go to advance and get a plastic prop tool, small flat head and phillips screw driver. That pretty much all you need. You have to take trim by seat belts off front window panels above dash. Rear panels by bose speakers. Sunvisors, rear mirror and hangers only on passenger side and then rear ones.

If I did that, I would break the back window for sure.
I've dropped the headliner before, its not fun, but not all that hard. Remove the handles, mirror, visors, a,b, and c pillar trim, dome light and handles. Basically everything that touches the headliner has to come down. Start on one corner, and pull. There are some clips in back, but they just pop out. I left the liner in the car, put the front seats down, and just worked above it. I found it easier than tying to remove it from the car.

I love my sunroof, and would not want to disable the whole thing just because the cable broke. Some junkyards have you remove the part. I consider it a plus, as it gets you familiar with how to do it on your car. Practice on their car, get it right on yours.
