Any advice on changing transmission oil?

Any advice on changing transmission oil?
My transmission seems to be having trouble changing gears somnetimes lately... it'll rev up, and wait before changing. It's been 40k since I got the transmission rebuilt, but I was worried about changing the oil before.
Anyone have advice on it, or know a place that goes through it? I know it has a square tool to unplug it, and I bought 8quarts of transmission oil just in case, but my plan is just to unplug it (the square bolt on the drivers side of the transmission), wait for it to drain, then guestimate and refill it up.
