Valve cover vs. Form a Gasket

I'm putting on new valve cover gaskets on my 92 SE and I'm trying to decide whether to put form-a-gasket on the mating surfaces. The FSM says to just put it on the seam between the timing chain cover and head and on the half moon shaped areas at the rear of the heads. Later in the book it says to lay a continuous bead on the heads. Which is correct?
Would it be better to apply the sealant on all of the surfaces (belt and suspender) or does this gasket have to float and should not be sealed to the cover and head?

Valve cover sealant

Yes, I checked with the dealer parts guy and they said the same, only on the seam at the timing chain cover and head and the half moon cutouts at the back, and the corners of the angle sensor. I guess this gasket must need to "float" for some reason. Perhaps the valve cover expands differently than the head.
Thanks.
