RIP Transmission

Lost 3rd gear this morning; the others are sure to go soon as well.

looks like ima have to get a rebuild because ive put too much love into this car. or find an inexpensive badassmutha car. but the latter is very unlikely.

heres to vg 4speed auto trannies.

Trust me a rebuild is just not worth it (2k+ for a good one) nor is a replacement )1-2k installed) as those will fail prematurely. I've been through three trannies and I didn't beat on them (other than my first one). If I could do it over I would have just gotten a cheap civic and save the 3500 that I spent all together.

Or you could just convert to 5-speed which is a little more reliable. I drive a 5-speed and it's not that much trouble city driving and my city is quite busy but not NYC busy.

once the gear is gone, it's gone

$100 for a car with a bad tranny?

I'm the one stuck driving the minivan right now because I'm doing carpool and she's working at McCormick place on occasion.

alex, do a 5 speed swap.... your car will be faster, and youll have more fun!!! you are a kid, just like me... im doing a 5 speed swap during the summer maybe......my VG auto tranny blew also.. i heard TONS of metal grinding inside of it, and it wouldnt go anywhere, so i knew it was toast.... just swap a stick into it man! especially if you owe $3000 on it

what do i need for the swap other than the 5-speed transmission and how complicated is it? do you think i could get my mechanic to do it, etc.?

and how much would it run to get a good, used 5-speed?

heh.

kinda funny that they put a transmission with such low standards into a car with 160hp/ 180 ft/lbs at the engine. pure laziness. wish i didnt need so much **** for a 5-speed swap and didnt have to hang a clutch, etc.

Hey all, I can't post new topics?????My max's auto tranny is acting wild..Let me explain. 1st gear strong-will burn out the whole way through---slow shift to 2nd(have to let off pedal), once in strong, all the way to another slow shift into 3rd(let off gas again) once in 3rd, strong- can cruise at high way speeds and accelerate with no slipping---hit the overdrive on-can't accelerate with out slippage.......can mantian speed though. When slowing, if you manually downshift, the shifts are very firm and responsive. can't see the tranny being blown since it does pull without slippage....could it be something electronic????Any thoughts/ help would be appreciated-----thanks

i might be going up to indy to get that stanza tranny for $450.

being it is shafted to a 2.4 liter car....im hoping it has had less wear on it than a tranny from the 3.0 sohc maximas.

i drove Badman up the shop where the tranny will be replaced. when the gears catch, hes fast as hell! makes me sad! had some douches riding my *** because i was doing 30...then 70 in a couple secs (hahah)

hey guys you think the burn-out question might have anything to do with driver skills?

for those of you thinking of doing a 5 spd swap, check this out, maybe (hopefully) you might find the help you need.
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/749143/3

a 5 spd swap is not that difficult. anyone with access to a garage or driveway, some tools and a little optimism can do it over a couple of days, maybe a week for the newbie. it's mainly logic and a little patience that's needed. and if you hesitate or don't understand you always have the org to come back to and ask the guys who knows more. good luck!

Anyway-Does any one else think my max may have another problem other than burnt up clutches?????? It pulls so strong with no slipping, just isn't shifting correct. I can't see the tranny being bad

the trans is electrically controlled so you could have dirty connections, failing solenoids, bad transcontroller etc...

you can dig through this site:
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/15 for info on the electrical stuff of the tranny, not sure how good it is, I have a VE tranny that works fine

Yeah ok, tried the diagnostic mode for the tranny on that site-----but it doesn't work on my car, if any one has done this, did it work for you?????
the power light comes on the first time you turn the key back on, but once you do the last step with the gas pedal, i get nothing......no light up and flashes.....I'm confused......

me neither. its probably a mechanical failure...so you might get ready to think of pitching the car or getting a new tranny.

on that note, i picked up the used tranny for my car...haha. long story short...never agree to let your friend with a hatchback camaro help you pick it up...the grease monkeys at the yard will crack the taillight and pour tranny fluid all over the back of the car!

anyway, im having my mechanic drop the pan, and replace the fluid and filter. good idea or bad idea? ive heard of people getting total lock up afterwards...but did they change the fluid the correct way or what was the deal? i just paid 600 for this transmission and im sure as hell not going to lock it up right off the bat.

just changing the fluid shouldn't hurt it.
what color was the fluid that came out of the trans?

oh, and never use a 3rd gen camaro hatch to carry anything that weighs.
lost a tail light to a sub I had when I loaded it in.

no; 3rd. 2nd owner only had the car for a few months and sold it to me. original owners own the honda car lot here in town, haha.

they know where to make their money...but know what they want to drive home.

the car would have been paid as of this june, but i took out another $2k for rims and upgrades last september (stupid me...)

then the transmission just went out.
its cool, though. the cars practically brand new now. im quitting my pizza job...havent been working there since the tranny went out anyhow.
