Replaced the tranny yesterday...
Well, since my input shaft bearings were toast, I decided it would be easier for me to just get a used tranny. Luckily, MrGone had a spare one from a low mileage car that I was able to buy off of him. I still have the old one and if I get some free time or some help, I might rebuild it as a spare.
Yesterday, MattComet82 drove down from the Seattle area (about a 3.5-4 hour drive) hauling the tranny and helping me install it. Everything went very well. We got the entire thing done in less than 6 hours, including a half hour or so for lunch and a couple of breaks. I put in some AMSoil 75/90 and it drives better than it has since I have owned it. Of course, it helps to have a shop with a lift and full air tools available:

This was the only picture I took (early on), since my hands were too greasy to want to touch my camera again. Besides, there isn't much to see in a tranny replacement.
Anyway, I want to thank Matt for going through all the trouble of driving 8+ hours (thanks to a wreck on I-84) and helping me get everything done. It was great to have locals help out. I owe Matt and Shawn for all of their efforts in getting my POS back on the road. Now I can't wait to drive up to the next meet (that I can get the day off).

I love the car, but now that I bought a full size 4x4 truck, I don't have to have a front wheel drive sedan for the second car. I am considering something a little faster and sportier (or possibly a convertible) and I can also consider rear wheel drive. Possibly a Mustang, Miata, Datsun 510 or a DSM. I would have to get an acceptable (to me) amount for mine and then find something I really want. It might not happen, I could just keep it. I don't know...

I don't have many Saturdays off this year that will work with the racing schedule. Unfortunately, I have some new responsibilities this year, so I can't take many Saturdays off, either.
I also need to do a few more things before the car is track ready.
First, I need to fix the exhaust. I bought a GReddy from someone on the east coast and the resonator was rusty and now has a hole. Overall, the exhaust is in great shape, but I need to get the resonator replaced. Not too bad driving, but any leak will effect performance.
Second, I need to find some decent track tires. I just bought new 17s and I don't want to ruin them taking it to the track. I have a couple of extra sets of wheels, but no decent tires to run right now.

I havn't even been to a track yet with my car, and I see how hard it is for drivers who have been driving stick for a long time to get what mags do.

The first time I went to the track, I put down 15.2 with just a y-pipe and full interior. If your car is in good condition and you don't have any issues with things like a worn clutch, you should be around 15.5 no problem.

what is it a nascar motor? That sucker has got to be BUILT...You just dont wind 400s up that high unless you have really REALLY good heads (that it needs to flow in order to get to 8K), a steel crank (no way I would trust a stock 400 crank at 8k) and one really big roller cam... I had a very large roller in my old 400 along with really good heads and I think 6500 was my limit...its been a long time though. Man I miss that motor and Chevy II.
I wouldnt mind getting a hold of that motor and putting it in my Chevelle
...tell you what you let me have the motor and I will let you race my car once...thats a great deal right lol.
