What stereos you guys use?
Right now i got a Sony MDX-M630 deck with a SOny minidisc changer in the glove box. Sony explodes in back (6.5) and polk 4 x 6's in front. 1 800 watt Boss amp to my Orion XTR 10. Was wondering if i should get a ported box instead or make a custom deck for the sub. so far sounds good. what do you guys have?

what kind of bass are you trying to achieve? a ported box will be bigger than a sealed, and the frequency response won't be nearly as flat (it will tend to peak near the tuning frequency of the box).
btw, check out the audio forum.

Dump the 4x6s up front and build a pod for some 6.5" coaxes or separates.
dump the BOSS amp as well and get a decent one for that orion. You're not even beginning to do that sub justice running it off a BOSS.
IIRC, the XTR 10 likes a mid-size sealed enclosure, or a larger ported one.. it's been about 10 years since I've messed with the XTRs though. used to have four XTR12s running off Orion's old HCCA amps. 1 ohm mono, baby!

Heres my current system:
HU: Kenwood excelon x789
Fronts: CDT CL61a's with about 100watts rms each
Rear: Chitty infinity reference 6.5's for rear fill
Sub: Image Dynamics 12" dual 2 ohm IDMAX running 1500watts rms @ 1ohm
Comps and HU to change this spring for a 3-way active system

HU: Alpine 9807 MP3/WMA/CD
Front: Diamond Audio M3 6.5s
Rear: Infinity Ref 6x9s
Sub: Eclipse aluminum 12 DVC
Amp: old school Phoenix Gold M44 4 channel -- two ch running the fronts, two ch bridged running the sub (not enough power, but sounds decent)
Wires: Phoenix Gold
I also have an old Fosgate x1000.1 that I have been meaning to hook up for the sub, but have never installed it.
There are pics of a lot of it on my cardomain.
I hope to get some seperates eventually and something that can handle more power in the rear deck. My amp gain is only at about 1/2 with the DA coaxials, but it is running full steam on the sub.

$90 Kenwood HU ghettorigged to factory Bose. Wired it so both left speakers are in series to the LR channel, vise-versa for the right. Keeps the impedance reasonable, and sounds fine. Not super, but good enough for roadtripping.

Kenwood.....
- Kenwood MP3/CD HU with flip down face
- Kenwood 6.5" 2-ways in the front
- Kenwood 30Wx2 RMS amp powering the fronts
- Kenwood 6x9" 4-ways in the back
- Bazooka Tube 8" unpowered sub
- Clarion 50Wx4 RMS powering the rears and sub.
Simple, but effective for my needs.

I have a 7-year old Sony CD-player with a 6-disc changer in the trunk. Infiniti reference tweeters upfront and installed Kenwood KFC series 6.75" 3-way speakers in the back. Later, I removed the stock 4X6 speakers upfront and installed 6.75" speakers there also. I also used some peel and seal for sound deadening in the front doors.
It sounds better than stock, but it's nothing fancy by any means (especially 7 years).

the old stock cassette/cd unit was outed in my max; didnt like to read the newer, longer cds..and liked to not give them back...and the cassette player didnt even work by the time i bought the car anyway...
put in a $50 160 watt pioneer head unit; blows the old unit away (much louder).
they replaced my back speakers already with some offbrand that has put up with me for the past year. i really dont think a system is necessary...im a musician and i cant emphasize how bad low frequencies are for the ears...especially at loud decibel levels. hearing loss is very gradual and unnoticable until its too late.

what i can't hear you... j/k yeah i know what you mean as i get older i don't crank up my stereo that often any more but sometime that "one" song comes on and you have to show off a little... even if it takes me a little while before i feel that i can hear like normal again which i know that i have lost a little of my hearing due to LOAD stereos and not using ear protection like i should have at the gun range. Oh well i only learn the hard way!!

Actually, you need to do a bit more research on that. mid-high frequency hearing is the easiest to damage and what goes first. the lower frequency stuff is sitll hard on the ears, but the higher frequency stuff will ruin your hearing much quicker.
sit in front of a 130dB stereo for a couple seconds or sit in front of a couple drum corps snare drums... see which ones get your ears ringing the quickest and take the longest for your hearing to come back.

I had a Blaupunkt tape deck in my car for a couple years, but I managed to fry something when I tried tricking it into letting me use the cd changer rca inputs for something else. It has a big plug to communicate w/ the changer, and I made a jumper so I could access the inputs - jumped the wrong ones and now it stays in store display mode! Anyway, I've bought 3 cd players in the last 2 months to replace it, but still don't have a head unit installed. The first one said it had AUX inputs but didn't, the second one was DOA, and the third one I just bought last night. Hopefully next week I'll be listening to my new Clarion HX-D10!!!

sure.. moderation is key, no matter what frequency.. but when people start spreading misinformation, I tend to get a bit
So "how loud is too loud?"
A good point of reference for everyone to check is to hold your hand just at the top of your ear and rub your thumb and fingers together. If you can't hear that, then the music is too loud. (You'll be surprised just how loud that is once you do it.) Of course, some people will experience hearing damage at lower overall levels than others, but that's a good rule of thumb for everyone. If you're going to be exposed to noises louder than that for more than a short period of time, then you need to be wearing some sort of hearing protection.
