Max shocks the crap out of me

Lately, every time i get out of the car, the door gives me a pretty good shock. I mean, i have little burn marks on my fingers from shutting the door. Is it just becuase it's really cold (low humidity) or is there possibly a grounding problem that would cause incredible static build-up on the body? This is getting ridiculous, and really annoying.

Thanks

Usually static electricity always builds up from running the heater. I believe the lack of humidity causes the static electricity to build up. For instance, if you use a humidifier connected to your heater in your house, the static electricity should stop.

I think you can buy a grounding strap to drag on the ground that actually is a rubber/wire strip that groungs the static electricity. I would mount it in the center of the car though, that way you can't see it from the outside of the car.
Good Luck

P.S. >> I get shocked like crazy everytime I shut the door to (I sometimes put one finger near to the top of the door and watch the blue spark !!!!!!!!!)

I get a visible spark in the middle of the day. When I got out to open the garage door I brushed the corner of the door with my chest and it shocked me THROUGH my winter coat.

My Max shocks me too! I have just gotten to the point where I will just instead of getting out and getting shocked, will put my arm on the door or against the metal frame of the door and it really lessens the shock - basically make sure you touch the door as you get out, not get out and tough the ground then touch the door to shut it. Thats what shocks the crap out of you!

Well, atleast I'm not alone. I was pretty sure (or hoping rather) it was just the cold weather. When I was in New Mexico I couldn't touch my car without getting a pretty good jolt, damn low humidity.

Broken Max

Sorry, I couldn't post on the main page for some reason, so im going to make this post my new home.

My car is a 1990 manual trans max

Anyway, I have this problem... I was in reverse, going backwards up a hill, pulling out of my friends driveway. Then I started rolling forward with the clutch all the way in, still in reverse. Suddenly my car started making a clicking sound, then it made a loud boom (not explosion) and it completely stopped, still running, but wouldn't move an inch. Even after I took it out of gear, it still wouldn't move. So I put it back in reverse, and gave it a little gas to see if I could undo what I did. It just heaved a little and didn't go anywhere. Then i put it in first, and gave it more gas and got it to pop out of whatever was keeping it from moving. So I drive it for a few blocks and while i'm at a light, I realize I can't put it back into first. Then my car dies, and I can't get it to start again. Now it doesn't start at all.

My friend claims that I blew my pressure plate. he says the same thing happened to him in his volvo. i have no idea though. Does anyone know what the problem is?

===on a side note===, before it blew, when it was in neutral it would make a constant clicking sound when the clutch was all the way out, and would stop once i put it all the way in. it would click about the same speed as the engine basically...

Sounds like the engine compression is blown. Also you can't create a new forum thread until you have a certain number of posts, 15 I believe. You should test the engine compression. If that's what it is, time for a new car or a new engine, I'm sure either one would be about the same price.

Be careful guys when filling up your tank. Do not want to get the blown up while filling up with sparks..

Going by the noise you heard in neutral the problem is the input shaft bearing of the transmission, it came apart.

These bearings are notorious for blowing... I wouldn't be surprised if at least every manual transmission Maxima owner will experience or already has experienced this problem.

Basically what happened is the bearing came apart. There are these metal pieces that hold the ball bearings in place and those metal pieces completely break apart and go throughout the transmission. What likely happened in your case is a piece of that metal got caught in between one of the gears causing it to lock up.

Basically, you'll likely need to get the tranny rebuilt or at the very least have the input shaft bearing replaced.

Some guys might try telling you that its the throw out bearing that went bad but its not. I've been burned by these stupid transmissions about 4 or 5 times now and definitely know when they're toast.

Good luck with everything.

Shocked

Same problem here, I guess that's just the way the Maxima is. I'm considering the ground strap...

the thing is, after i got it un stuck, i could shift for a little while, and it was still working... its just that at first it seemed a little easier to put it into gear, like when i would move it to the left it wouldnt push back as much. then i could put it into second. but once i was at the stoplight, it wouldnt move to the left anymore... (it being the stick) then it died.

does it sound like i still need a new tranny? i was thinking it is just the clutch mechanism.

ohhh also, the noise in neutral, it hadn't just started happening. it's been happening for about a week before this happened. when this disaster happened, it was a different sound, like clack. but my onomatopoeia just causes confusion so i'll stop describing the sounds with words

ps. sorry to the people who get shocked by their maxima. it never happened to me and i apologize for invading your post

Although it does sound like the input shaft bearing is shot, this can't be your main problem. Even if the input shaft bearing is completely shot your car will still start and run with the clutch pushed in.
