mass airflow sensor
mass airflow sensor
hi, i had to get my car towed to a shop the other day because it kept stalling out on me. it was so bad that the car would start really ruff then just stall.
the shop i had it towed to called me today and said that my mass airflow sensor needs to be replaced and that it will cost 398 parts and labor. does that sound right? i dont know what else to do but pay it cause i have aaa but they will only tow it 3 miles then i think 10 dollars each additional mile, and that will run me about 100 dollars. so basically im just wondering if im being ripped off. thanks in advance

how old is that O2 sensor?

When you restart after a stall, do you get a Check Engine Light? If so, have you checked the codes?
O2 sensors and cleaning MAFs
Just want to point out if you are having trouble at idle, it should never be related to the o2 sensor. Engines usually idle richer than stoich to prevent frequent misfires. O2 sensors in cars before obd-2, and many with obd-2, can't read the richer mixture so they are disabled below about 1500rpm.
I wouldn't recommend cleaning a MAF unless it got dirty sitting disconnected in a junkyard. MAFs shouldn't get dirty if you are using an air filter, and most of them are heated up really hot after you turn the car off to burn any contamination that gets on them. You would be more likely to inadvertently damage a MAF trying to clean it.
Computers in cars might be irritating, but they are also the reason we get better gas mileage today, tailpipe emissions have gone down drastically, and cars almost never need tuneups anymore.
I heard an amazing statistic a while ago that California's ULEV tailpipe emissions limits are actually lower than some air quality alert days. So at times what is coming out of the exhaust is cleaner than what went in.

tell that to my 20 mpg camaro with 50% less than the requred emissions output that has a carb.

What do you mean not put it on? There will be a hole in your manifold if he didn't put it on, and I do believe that would cause you to fail emissions.
