lost my valve cover thread.......here's a question
do I have to take this off (red) to get to the valve the cover to replace gasket (green)? I am guessing yes and how hard is it?
I can see the oil its leaking burning from where the gasket is dead

I talked to the guy there amd he said if you see the steam/smoke coming from the outside near the edge of the gasket, I would probably just need the cheaper one

Master cylinder work ok???
lol i got the master cylinder and put it on and while I was putting it on, I hit the piece that it fits over and I got air into the lines and so I havent had a chance to test it but I havent seen any leaking so thats a good sign
Well if you want to be sure it is not going to leak, then go with the grommet set...Or you could go with gasket only set and HOPE it doesn't need the grommets replaced too..

before you pull the intake manifold off, try using a #3 phillips and tightening the screws on the valve cover. often that's all it takes to stop the seepage and you can save yourself hours of work.
If not, ONLY BUY THOSE GASKETS FROM THE DEALER!!!!
I can't say it any simpler than that. you're guaranteed the right parts that way and you know the quality is good. You're looking at like $15, so it's not like you're going to get skrood by dealer prices.

I thought the gaskets for the plenum were like 80.00 from the dealer ??
Is there somewhere else I can get FACTORY gaskets ?
I'm going to be doing the same procedure when I do the exhaust manifold bolts. I figure knock both out in a weekend after the transmission is replaced.

there ya go. part numbers and everything for a VG produced between 88 and 91.
that's all 4 intake manifold and throttle body gaskets, and if you're just changing valve cover gaskets, you only need two of them.

If time is of the essence, I recommend going with the OEM gaskets from the dealer. It’s been my experience over the last two years that something changed in the databases that are available to the aftermarket retailers.
I recently changed the front crankshaft seal and the oil pan gasket seal on my ’94 SE. I first check on line to get the right part numbers. Then, had the tech at the shop look the numbers up, both numbers matched. Both parts were wrong. The crankshaft seal was too small and the half moon shaped gaskets (one front the other back) were too short. I called 15 retailers in my area and asked for the parts. Each game me the same number, but I had them measure each one (at first, I thought maybe the part box was labeled wrong). Nope, each part at each store was the same and wrong. Then, I had them check the various kits and parts of similar description but with a different name, no one had the right seals. I had to wait and go to the dealer. I ended up paying 30% less for the crankshaft seal and 150% more for the oil pan kit.
I also changed all three belts. The numbers listed in the database for my max were wrong. The long belt was way too long (3 inches) and each short belt were too short. I had the tech match up the original belts to the belts on the shelf to get the right ones. I got all three Goodyear belts for less than the price of the middle size OEM from the dealer.

(BTW, sorry about the incomplete post. That darn 15 post thing. I can’t edit my post and I can’t start a new topic. )

.I did the valve covers/plenum on my friends old 89 SE using parts from and had no trouble at all. It's a toss up I guess. Customer cars and such it's easier to go to the dealer because it removes any and all question (well, should anyway
), but normally I ask if they have a preference. I also only use Napa and dealers. blah blah blah
VG parts are usually not a problem since they're the same as the Z31 gaskets for the most part. the problem is when you try to get engine parts for the VE. they're either mislabeled for a VG30DE, or they simply can't get them for the most part. when I'm ordering gaskets and engine parts (timing chains, seals, etc) I go to the dealer and ONLY the dealer. right part, first time. no waiting. it's worth the few bucks extra.

I gots no problem with people that CAN get the parts.... but try going to the local Vatozone and getting a valve cover gasket for a VE.... or a tranny seal.
I've been to the parts store about 15 times trying to get transmission axle seals.. I have nEVER got the correct seal from a parts store, no matter whether it was VG, VE, 5 spd, auto, VLSD, or non.. Head to the dealer and you get the right part every time.
But there are always those few people and shops that can and do get the right parts.

The problem I've had with after market retailers really started to happen just in the last two years. I think the problem is in the one or two databases used by the retailers. I only mention it as a caveat. I don't like paying dealer prices.

when people shop strictly by price, something has to give.
Quality is already gone, now they have to cut the people who were checking the data
