I noticed there was a small black box with some cables going to it in the front/passager's side of my trunk and have no idea what it is to. The wires going to it were eaten through a long time ago, so I was just curious as to what it actually is.

 

Looks like a control box for a cd changer.....

 

You must have horrible gas mileage. That is the cylinder shutdown unit. Your car runs on 3 cylinders during slow city driving with that out you are wasting gas with all 6 activated.

 

??? I didn't thinks our cars had that kind of technology built into them becauyse of their age. Have not heard of this before.

 

 

i am no expert by any means but i am pretty sure our cars didn't come with that option. I may be wrong but I'm willing to put my money on not a option

 

I believe that box is the control unit for the ABS.

 

Do you even own a Maxima? discplacement on demand technology wasn't even available to the public until the early 2000's

i had 2 boxes in the rear of my trunk....one was some kind of rechargeable battery, and i never figuredout what the other was. they were placed just behind the seat, bolted on the support brace

Looks to me like one of the old cell phone boxes, especially with that telephone style jack.

Cadillac used technology like that in the 80's. My friend had a Cadillac that could drop down to 6 cylinders then down to 4 when cruising.


Also, that Wikipedia site isn't really all that great for solid information. Any person can go on there and put the information on there.

 

^^ I agree, Cadillac Had those and they didn't last very long before malfunctioning, cadillac scrapped the Idea only 1 Model Year later, the correct technology wasn't invented yet to have it work reliable.
Neat Idea back then though.

Thats a GSM amplifier. Its for old cell phones as Craig said. They are either in your trunk or under one of the front seats.

 

Its a black box like the ones they use on airlines.

 

All of you are wrong. It is the black box that goes to the FAA once the car is wrecked. There is information stored there that helps them determine the cause of the accident. The wires went to tiny microphones embedded in the dash and a tiny breathalyzer hidden in the steering wheel. There was another sensor to detect "bobbing" because oral sex causes accidents too.

I can't believe all the knowledgeable guys here didn't know this.

To answer your question I've owned a 90 VG for about 2.5 years before giving up on it due to me goin through three trannies.

As stated already this technology has been out for years but it has failed due to many electrical issues and many cylinders becoming flooded and such due to these issues.

Read posts 12 and 13. I am going off of my current knowledge of it now but I'm pretty sure it wasn't named the same as it is now. It's more reliable and I am guessing they have a better cylinder mangement unit now.

Awsome thanks! Definatly believe that it is the phone thing because I know it use to be wired for a car phone (threw the damn thing out...was all rusty and non-functional).

I am disapointed though that my car doesn't have ABS Checked the fuses and everything, and that would be a big no. Sucks though because I really could of used it today when I rear ended a guy (not hard at all, more like a little tap) while driving on the freeway and all the sudden it just stop! Everyone around me came || to hitting the person infront but I was the unfortunate one who did hit someone (guy in front had ABS). Luckily thanks to our foam bumpers and his foam bumper, there was NO damage what-so-ever! Not even a mark! Guy was cool, we shook and said everything looks good on both ends and then said our good-byes. (slippery roads as well).

 

yea if you had ABS. i belive the ABS computer is located in the trunk near the passenger side speaker.

 

Yeah have you bother to check either the Haynes manual or any online manual, you putts! The box between the two rear speakers is the antenna amplifier for the cellphone. And no cylinder managment, oh and learn to drive, three trannies in 2.5 years, remember R is for Reverse not ROCKET

 

As stated earlier it was a JOKE. I was givin them a hard time but people got serious and tried to negate me when only the experienced org-ers new I was bsing about it.

I know how to drive just not slow. I barely used R just N then D. lol. But hey when you don't pay for the replacements then it doesn't hurt as much. I was never given car responsibility until this year when I got my sunbird in Spetember. Then the HG popped and they got me a cool and quick probe. I did lots of highway racing and turning my O/D off so I can get that drop to third gear. My tq converter "exploded: (not literally but it did find a way to break) twice and I lost my vb and first gear my first time driving these weak automatics.

I got it with a slipping auto that I am tring to find a 5-speed to swap in.

 

An even easier way to tell is to look for the ABS light on the upper left side of the guage cluster (unless its been swapped)
