Fluttering sound between 1500-2000 RPM (manifold studs?)

I posted awhile back about a fluttering sound I hear between 1500-2000 RPM. I thought I was hearing it all the time, but after actually paying attention I found that I'm only hearing it when the engine is cold. Someone suggested it may be manifold studs, does this sound right? Any other ideas of what it could be?

Could you be more specific about what the sound is like and where it's coming from?

a broken stud will tick all the mf time...I am in this boat and it sucks but fortunately I am doing an engine/tranny swap this sunday which will solve all my problems at the same time-exhaust studs, huge power loss after warm up(VG so no, it's not a ks) and last but not least slipping tranny...

Yeah, when the engine is cold and I'm shifting, between 1500-2000 RPM there is a fluttering sound that is faster at 1500 RPM, but then gets slower as I near 2000 RPM, the fluttering then altogether disappears at 2000 RPM. Also, at 1500 RPM, the sound pitch of the fluttering is lower, and then gets a little higher pitched as I near 2000 RPM. When the engine warms up there is no fluttering sound.

It only ticks all the time when it has gotten really bad. In the early stages it only ticks while cold.

Holy: it could very well be your studs, have you visually inspected all of them?

No, I haven't, I don't even know where to look! Can you tell me where I should look for them?

look on your exhaust manifold... you cannot miss it...... the front manifold.. the studs are right there... there should be 6 studs per manifold.......the rear manifold is a litle harder to see though

i think i have the same thing sometimes. its not the exhaust manifold. it sounds like a flapping sound. like a card in some bicycle spokes. seems to come from an area of the engine bay close to the driver. never have figured it out

Is this on ur VG? If so mine does the same exact thing. The dealer told me the distributor shaft is worn out makin the noise. It only happens at lower rpms and like cruising thru parkin lot.

interesting....but the distributer shaft is on the passenger side, right? There aren't really any moving parts on the driver's side except for a cv joint and may be a wheel bearing...

As for the my problem with my studs, I think that the guy a few posts up is right. I was able to hear a tapping noise when cold but I tought it was bad/thick oil that the previous owner put in. After warm up it would disapear but now it ticks loud and clear all the time...

I have this same problem with my VE. I have a feeling it is the power steering pump needing a rebuild. It sounds like it is coming from that area.

Nope, I know what the VTCs sound like, lol. I have that ticking sometimes too. But this isn't a ticking, it's a fluttering that has pitch and rises in pitch as I near 2000 RPM and then it altogether disappears. Oh, and it's a VE of course, just look to the left of all my posts and you'll see "SE".
I'll check out the exhaust manifolds, thanks for the idea.

hmm, honestly I don't remember ever reading about studs going bad on a VE. Plus, as we determined when they are a little bit bad you can hear some tapping when cold and when they get really bad the tapping is all the time...I am curious now...don't forget to let me/us know when you find out...gl.

No, I know it is not my VTCs. It is a fluttering whistling noise that gets higher in pitch as the rpms go up and then goes away after driving for a while. I took a piece of hose and used it to listen around the area where the noise seems to be coming from and I believe it is the ps pump. It is loudest in that area.

for me it happens on my VG - the VE, which i sold - had 5 broken studs. changing those was a real *****. ve studs definitely break. however the ones on my vg, still original after nearly 200k

because the tensioner is not putting any pressure on the chain so it is scraping against the case

actually if it is more of a whistling sound it could be the p/s belt, check that for any rips

Mine doesn't sound like an air whistle, but maybe it is the ps pump, mine power steering moans when I turn at slow speeds(especially tight turns), even though I've filled it up with Dot 3.
