ABS Error message

The ABS warning lite is on on the dash. I've been having problems with the ABS being hyperactive lately. I cleaned the contacts for all of the ABS system and now I get a code 8, which in the stickies indicates a bad left rear sensor.
In anyones expirence, is this a straightforward bad sensor, or is this code just bogus. I hate to spend $200 on a new sensor and find out it's something else.

Each rear sensor's connector is color coded. One is reddish and one is gray I believe. I have an extra that has the red connector. Let me know if that's the one you need. Did you clean the abs sensors at the wheels? If they get too dirty with crap/metal shavings, it might freak out the abs ecu. If yo have cleaned the connector and the magnetic sensor/wheel, then it's probably a something inside the wiring harness. Sometimes when people do suspension work and don't remove the front abs sensor, they stretch it to move stuff around. That often damages and ruins the front ones.

Update

I followed the code 8 indicating a problem with the rear drivers side ABS sensor. Turned out that when I cleaned the contacts, this connector was so hard to get to I didn't get it seated. After seating it the ABS lamp went out.
I've since connected the Ohm meter to the front two ABS sensor connectors and found that when I wiggle the wire in the wheel well for the front drivers side sensor, I can pretty much get whatever resistance I want, including open circuit. Doing the same to the passengers side produces a steady resistance in spec (0.8 to1.2 kOhms). Thus the front, drivers side ABS sensor has become little more than a big refrigerator magnet.
