New to the .org & got a question

Hey everybody. Just got my new thread posting privledges and thought I'd start out by saying, that without everybody's omnipotent knowledge of these cars, I'd pretty much be SOL with this thing. Thanks!
My story: I bought her for from my friend for $500, not bad for a VE5 with 116,000miles...but she needed some work and TLC as he abused her. New clutch,coils,tune-up, JY tranny and she runs like a champ. Still have a low idle and stalls sometimes but probably IACV (?) But those coils helped IMMENSELY.

My Question: Old tranny was noisey as hell and I got quoted $1200-$1800 for a rebuild as they didn't know what was making the noise (probably input shaft bearings) So I got a junkyard tranny for $300 and found out it has a leak the easy way by noticing the amsoil just kinda forming underneath everywhere i park. Its definately coming from the Sriking Rod Oil Seal. As per the FSM...it doesn't look too hard to replace (4 steps) Anybody ever replace it? Thanks

p.s- Sorry for the long post, just stoked!

Yes... I did it along w/the boot during my trans swap. Just don't forget step 1 of 1-5 above 1-4; or you'll have a fun time.

I finally found a guy who only does manual transmissions. He let me watch him tear it down and explained to me what was wrong. He would have let me watch him rebuild it to if I had the time.

Wish I could help with your seal quesion. Good luck.
you have any contact info for this guy? i want to get mine rebuilt over the summer when i put new clutch in. i jus got my truck done at mr.transmission on broad river and dont feel so good about the $1600 i gave them and he drove the hell outta my truck

Great...just when I thought i was getting off easy. Is it necessary to do all that to replace that seal. I wasn't looking to get out drive shafts or anything.

No, not the axles, just drain the gear oil 1st.

It might just be the axle seals and they are dripping down, but I could be wrong. Those are much more common problems than the area you pointed out.

If it is the striking rod seal, it doesn't look that hard in the FSM, but some things look easy there and are really a PITA.

Also, I would buy new gaskets (make sure you HAVE them before starting this) for the throttle body and IACV. Then, take them both out and clean thoroughly.

Carolina Manual Transmission Center
Jeff Starnes, Owner
864-243-6085

I found this guy by calling local chain stores. None of them were inspiring confidence but finally one them was honest with me. (don't remember which one, I called all of them) He said that none of the chain stores that he know of actually rebuild manual trannies. Not enough of them to have a specialist on staff. He said that they outsource all the manual work to Jeff Starnes and suggested that I contact him directly in order to save time and money.

He is located in Pelzer. (outside of Greenville, about 1.5 hours up I-26) All he does is manual transmissions. He charges a flat $250 for his labor plus actual parts cost. Very knowledgeable and competent guy. Has no problem with you watching and learning from him. I highly recommend him.

Cliff is right. You should at least check the axle seals. Might as well since you'll already have the gear oil out. Plus, it could be leaking from the axle seals and pooling near the striking rod seal as cliffy mentioned.

Just a few more thoughts,

fugi
