All 3rd gens w/y-pipe, b-pipe, and stock muffler....
I have a similar set-up w/ a stock 2000 maxima muffler(dual chambered one) and it's very quiet. I even don't have a resonator. Yours should be quiet also but the 2000 muffler is one other quiet option for you.
New=too much! Used = about $130-$200, depending on who you get it from. Pretty good deal to me(although I paid $200, about a year ago). This thing should outlast 90% of the aftermarket mufflers out there.

Im planning on doing that...eventually...

I always wondered that.....
was it really the muffler or was Nissan just pulling everyones chain?? IMO, eventhough its got that "special valve" technology I doubt it produces any noticeable gains to the wheel, but I don't know...Jeff??

will adding a 2000 muffler to a 3rd gen max add horsepower as it does for the 5th gen max?

Jeff, you got an opinion on this?
This muffler design is dervived from the Skyline GTR series in Japan. I had a MPG of the thing but lost it. It acts like a smaller muffler at low revs and at a certain rpm/load it open another flap for more flow(high end) This way, the muffler can still be quiet, retain some low end backpressure and still flow decently on the high end. This is the theory. In reality, I don't know. Cat-backs aren't worth a whole lot anyway. But for me, w/ all the exhaust mods, the last thing I need is some ricy-*** loud muffler. This is quiet, high quality(OEM Nissan) and has more power potential(theory is sound) than my other choices(stock or some type of near stock sounding aftermarket muffler, if that even exists)
