I didn't notice that oil cap. At least it looks better than the stock black plastic one.

Dany motor looks great --fix that radiator overflow tube hose clamp that attaches to the radiator it just needs a crimping with the ol-needle nose pliers and put that thing in its place ...

Good work I like your attention to deail I keep my engine perfect to !!...

Keep it up

Ok, so you VE people that have posted... did you media blast your valve covers and plenum to get them to look like that? I've got oil and crud stains that I just can't get off for the life of me. I guess I haven't tried a pressure washer though...

Also, the emissions tube that runs behind the valve cover on top of the plenum, that's aluminum, right? So, in theory, it could be anodized? I'm not one to speak of engine detailing though... and I refuse to post any pictures.

I'm going to be doing either a head gasket or a motor on a VQ pretty soon. which I haven't had to do on the 4 VEs I've had so far.
I guess I'll never know which is easier to work on

I dunno what the problem you had on the VE was... I pulled the engine out of my car in 2.5 hours.
(of course it took 2 days to put it back in, but that's only cause I misplaced three baggies of bolts to put everything together and had to keep digging in my 'bucket of bolts' for spares that would fit! GRRRR.)

The intake and valve covers on my VE were sandblasted just to get them clean, but the silver you see is powdercoating on mine. Eastwood Argent Silver HotCoat powder, with a small splash of black to darken it up a bit.

Well being used to working on vq's you get acclimated with the little quirks about them and then to jump on a VE that looks almost like it, but really is so much different. I guess that is waht I mean by not liking them, they are to close to the same, but different enough to p!ss me off.

Well for that I think they are pretty much the same, but like I just said to matt they have little differences that you get used to and then the damn VE comes in and throws you for a loop, thats all I was triyng to say, I am sure they are good motors and cars just like the VQ and VG....

Yup.. I'm pretty familiar with both of them... I'd rather diagnose issues on a VQ, simply because of the OBD-II... but I'd rather maintain a VE. all of the belts and hoses are easy to reach. Y pipe and CV joints are also easy to get to. there's more vacuum hoses, but you've got a nice pretty chart to read for them.

with the VQ, the power steering belt is a pain on the 4th gens and an absolute NIGHTMARE on the 5th gens to reach and tension properly. for the 3 gens, it's a 15 min job for me to change belts. routine maintenance is simply much easier on the VE. but the VQ has other advantages that I prefer as well. CVs are easier to change, diagnostics, etc.

you sir are 110% right, I agree with all of these satements, I just wonder why the hell nissan would think it was a good idea to make these cars harder to work on when the VE was just fine.....and it really is not much different than the VQ other than the placement of a few items....which of course are the ones you really need to get to and cant now, Thank you Nissan!! But yeah the OBD-II does make it a lot easier to figure stuff out.

This may be a stupid question, but how exactly does one go about cleaning their engine without damaging it? I have a cylindrical air filter, so of course i would take that off, anything else? And then what, just spray soapy water all over it, it really won't damage anything?

IBmattsayingjusthoseitdown..

I just use regular dish soap mixed up in a old windex spray bottle with water...But if it is really dirty/oily i would use some degreaser spray..Hose it down with water, then spray the cleaner on there,i use a old broom for the heavy oil deposits a small brush will work good too...

Once you get it all lathered up,wash it down with the hose...I also use my leaf blower to dry the engine/electrical parts/sensors/sensor connectors...

Yes the neighbors will at you when they see you with a leaf blower under the hood, but fark'em..

While the generic OBDII codes are nice, the VE ECU has the same diagnostic outputs as the VQ does.
Thats assuming you have the right tools of course
