That K&N really worth it?

That K&N really worth it?
Had a member over in NissanFrontier.org find this. A very interesting read, and very surprising. I always knew there was a payoff, and never really did believe a K&N would give you 5 extra HP.
There are 2 different areas here. One is done personally using different filters for Air Flow, and Filtration. The other is a test done by a university for AEM.

Ok guys I bought a K and N panel drop in filter and the nissan tech said it created a oily film on the maf sensor and that was why my idle was lopey so he put in a paper one and gave me back my K and N I liked it when I had it but has anyone else had a prob. like this?
Thanks
Thanks

I've used K&Ns on/off on the maxima since 1998. I've never ever had a problem with oil on the maf.
But I'll tell you guys this, VG maximas have a habit of not liking aftermarket filters. Not all have this but I've read of plenty having problems. My bro's VG 5-sp did this

I still haven't figured out why they always need cleaned on the MR2. Its like there's some sort of filtration issue on these because they get dirty after 3,000 miles easily (even less in the past). Throttle repsonse goes to hell and there is noticable power loss. Spray it with some carb cleaner and the thing runs like new.

Better throttle response is the main thing you will notice, along with the noise.
The stock intake did seem to have a better top end, the mandrel stronger on the low end. But that's just butt dyno.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. But I need to address my poor engine/throttle performance. I am getting sporadic rev alterations while driving, especially during acceleration. And sometimes the engine just wants to almost die when I push hard on the gas. I was advised by a mechanic that it might be a bad MAF sensor, but my suspiscion is that it is just a dirty one.
I've have a cheap eBay cone filter attached to my MAF for the last 40,000 miles, and with all the dust here in Florida from back dirt roads I wouldn't be suprised if it's gunked up the MAF. My question here is about the filter. What is the best way to clean these filters? Is it necessary to oil them? If so, what type of oil should I use and how is it applied? Also, are cone filters like those from Stillen, K&N, or Monster Flow (WSP) better quality than those generic ones from eBay, and if so, better able to protect from dirt and keep the MAF clean?
If I do in fact have to change my MAF sensor, I have heard something about those from the Z32 or Cobra. Would one of these provide better performance, especially if I want to go turbo with my VG in the future?
Thanks in advance.

Wow... I haven't seen this thread in ages, and I started it.
JWT offers a swap out with a Cobra MAF www.jimwolftechnology.com but it requires getting the ECU reprorgramed I believe.
As for the filter, it all depends upon how generic. Though honestly I would go with the new AEM dry filter. It will save that oiling.
For cleaning them, if they had oil before, it is necessary to oil them afterwards.

This is a really old thread, resurrected twice now...
Anyway, I doubt warpspeed even offers it anymore, but don't quote me on that. Do a search and you'll find that you can build a CAI yourself for much less $$$ and very little extra work.
