$200.00 for a COMPLETE VTC's rebuild??

After perusing the VTC's archives I've decided NOT to rebuild it on my own. I should have redone it whilst doing the engine swap but took a risk that it wasnt defective and spent the funds on other items. RED DEmon has only been driven 25 miles in a month even though the noise disappears after 2 minutes of idling. I'm afraid to drive the car for fear that the VTC cap may pop off which is what happened to the previous engine.

I'm having a Nissan technician remove and reassembly EVERYTHING for $200.00 (MY parts, his labour). This dude has been a mechanic for about 30 yrs of his life and there's always a line of people waiting for him at home so I'm confident that his work will be accurate.

MY questions is :
Is this a fair price for those of who who have had it done by a mechanic and also for the DIYer?

Thanks for your input.

If the $200 is labor charge to remove and replace the VTCs, then it is an amazing deal. If it is just to rebuild VTCs, then its not so hot.

I would pay that for sure for the labor. Ask him if he is going to be in the Northwest anytime soon...

Ahh thanks for the input. As much as I was determined to have him do it I still wanted to hear from the more exp. members.

$200.00 is for the ENTIRE job. He will retime it if nec.

I'll definitely ask him Cliff, but I'll ask to redline that VE5 of yours.

VE..he's a friend of mine but I don't think his price will vary much for a stranger. He isnt charging me as much as he would charge another because I told him I have 10 children and my ex wife has sued me for everything I owe. All I have left is "The RED DEmon".
I figure he will take 5 hrs or less with the car. He has all the power tools and he does this "sorta thingy" on a daily basis (At Nissan and then at his house)

good deal, but it sounds like he is doing a rebuild not a replacement, but that is still a good price.

I assume it may take about 5 hrs and could be wrong. I KNOW that he wont charge me 200.00 for a 10-17 hr job ( would be much more).

Pardon me if I wasnt explicit enough but the dude is doing everything thats nec. for the removal, rebuilding and replacment of the SAME VTC's sprockets. The oil gallies WONT be cleaned nor would anything else be done according to the TSB's. I've asked him to advance the timing so "ah cudd get nuff speed man". I'll post how much time he took after the completion of the task.

Thanks again for your inputs.

VtC's were completed today. Dude took just under 5 hrs. His rate is 250.00 for anyone. Should anyone need it done I'll supply his contact info and they can coordinate it with him.

He said that it's about 13 hrs according to the dealer and the labour is just over a grand, however he's found a fast accurate way to do it and has rebuilt many without any problems.

Thanks everyone again for your input.

Sorry, to interrupt but could someone inform me how much it costs to rebuild an automatic tranny? Also, how hard is it to find a tranny to replace the old one? I'm just curious. I read somewhere that someone was able to get their hands on an auto tranny for 3 hundred bucks. That would be a good price but I'm not sure I'd be that lucky. I hope I don't have to worry about my car's tranny.

ok, I guess he just works quick. Its not that hard, the VTC's themselves take about 5 mins to do.
