3rd Gen Respect!

I recently purchased a 1999 GS 300 and have been browsing the clublexus forums for additional Lexus knowlege. I have a 4th Gen but I thought u boys in the 3rd Gen forums might get a kick out of this one:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was driving around, just relaxing to the soft cushy Lexus ride when I see this white Benz S Class drive by me. It had a nice bodykit and 18-20 inch AMG rims. As it pass by me, I see the S 55 badge with a Lorinser badge. Something was fishy about it since we were going pretty fast and the car was noticably quite. From experience, AMG Benz’s make a nice deep sound when they accelerate, even at low RPM's. And most catchy, this Benz had a dual exhaust. Now if I remember correctly, S430’s, S500’s and S600’s had dual exhaust tips, while the S 55 and S 65 had Quad exhaust pipes.

Anyway, he accelerates and cuts off a slow moving vehicle in front of me and when I saw the lights turn red, I switch off into the other lane. At the light, I roll down my window to see if he wanted to go for a run. He doesn’t roll down his window, but I turn on my power button regardless. Light turns green and we both launch it. I jump out to an easy 3 car length lead to around 60 MPH. OK, now I had my answer: he wasn’t a real S 55. And there was no Supercharged AMG sound to the engine either or else he would have stolen my lunch and then had me for lunch.

I’m braking at this point and creeping at around 40 when I see a tan colored Nissan Maxima just zoom by. It was a 1989-1992 bodystyle. It took me a full second to grasp that he was trying to send a message and punch it after him.

So I took off after him but by now he was going pretty fast. 60…. 70…. 80…..90 and now I’m finally up to his passenger side door. I was a little dissatisfied at this point because it took me so long to catch up with a 15 year old Maxima. Now I know the mid 90’s Maxima’s were fast, but this old Max really surprised me with his high end power. I don’t know if it was because of me or that he was modded. Up in the distance about a ¼ mile away, I see some traffic so I slow down. The Max doesn’t and keeps going. He probably thinks it’s a victory for him.

I went into the freeway and guess what, the Max was there as well. I wanted to let him go, but traffic wasn’t in sight at this point and let’s face it, my ego was effected by the fact that I made up only about 5 car lengths from 50-100 with this old Max. So now I speed up to him. I get up beside him and he acknowledges me. I floor it at this point and he does to. However, this time, he was in my rear view mirror and falling. I put up 5 car lengths on him before I shut it down.

Anyway, to the kitted up S Class. Sweet ride. But for badging it as an S 55. If I was insecure enough to badge my car as a higher model, at least I wouldn't be racing with it to begin with. I won't brag that I beat up on him, but next time, maybe some ricer will. And how fast are the 1989-1993 Maxima's?

??? so theres some 3rd gen badged as an S55?? I would think theres a real noticeable difference between the two.. OP of that thread was a little unclear...or did the 3rd gen come in later??

but as far as how fast these 3rd gens are, a stock 92-94 5spd can stay even if not beat a 4th gen...

Hey hey, come on now. My brother and I raced my mom's third against my fourth and we all know who reigns supreme around my house. Think about it. Why would they evolve another car to lose against the previous year?

You don't know your history son.

Nissan was poor when they designed the 4th, so comprimised alot. Someone else could be more specific.

Was your moms car a VE 5-speed? or did you not pay attention to what you quoted?

In your sig, you mention you like to drag, so I wont tell you which is faster, I will help you find YOUR OWN answer! Acceration is based on power/weight, any drag racer knows that. Now each engine makes the same amount of power (190hp), and the weight of two cars is within 100lbs. Gear ratios are identical, so which car do you think is faster again?

Cool story.. I actually got owned awhile back on the highway by a GS.. I was so mind boggled that I forgot to look at which one it was. Im pretty sure it wasn't a 300, but I could have swore a 400 I beat before. Had to have been the 430. Those things are monsters.

All a 4th gen will do is get a hood length on a VE 5spd. After that, it's all 3rd gen from there. Have done it plenty of times. Nissan was broke when they came out with the 4th gen and the only thing that evolved on that car was the engine and maybe a bit of the interior. Everything else went to practicality rather then performance.

they would be very close in the straight, but as soon as a turn comes by the VE5 will win hands down. 4 wheel indi suspension + VLSD = pwnage

a. Everyone knows that VE 5spd is king.

b. Everyone knows that VQ30 5spd is king.

c. Everyone knows that VQ35 6spd is king.

d. Everyone knows that a 4thGen with a VQ35 swap is king.

Pick your poison and shutup. Thanks.

a. They created God's personal chariot, the VQ30DE 5spd.
b. They discontinued God's personal chariot, the VE30DE 5psd due to financial struggles.

they had to cut corners to survive.
while the ergonomics improved the feel of the car did not.
the 4th gen is a nicer cruiser, but the limited powerband and lack of IRS don't help it's case overall enough for me to be willing to go looking for another one.
that and the fact of how rare a 4th genm with VLSD is....

In response to the question on how fast the 3rd Gen maximas are. I pushed my 92 GXE to approx 155, needle a little to the left of 6 O-clock on the sped.
