lifter tick

lifter tick
ive posted about this before, it's definitly not VTC's ive tried every check listed on the org for that , when the car isn't started for a day or 2 , as soon as the car is started it ticks like crazy, as the car warms up the tick dies down and goes away, then you can only hear it when the trottle is opened, at idle the tick is gone, im assuming that the oil isn't getting to the top of the engine fast enough on start / when the car isn't at idle, is there anyway to check if this is an oilpump problem or if it's just a lifter / rocker in one of the cylenders?
i just did a fresh oil change yesterday so it's not bad oil or anything like that

Take the Fram off and throw it away and never use one again. Buy the Toyota filter or another high quality filter.
I have heard nothing but bad things from fram filters.
It may be coincidence but I put one on my old car about a month after I got it. The car had no tick what so ever and within a week of putting the Fram on I developed the VTC tick.

on another hand anyone have a picture of where the oil sending unit should be? i wanna tap a manual pressure reader in the line and see what my pressure is..

my 89 VG does the same thing, not the VTC, its fram. I started to hear mine when I started to change my own oil (and used Fram till I meet the .org) instead of whatever they oil change place used.
Fram=ticking=

Do like Dan said...NAPA gold or WIX. I think the NAPA gold is a rebadged WIX. I know the Carquest filter is a WIX.

I also have a horrible lifter problem. When I bought the car I thought it was lifter noise but then people on the org told me that it's the vtc's. So I went ahead and replace/rebuilt both vtc's and the ticking/clacking is still present. In fact it just keeps getting worse. It makes my car sound like a POS.
I didn't know that a cheap oil filter was the main cause of this problem. When I replace the lifter(s) I'll get some toyota filters.

Check to see if any of your exhaust manifold studs are broken/missing.
For lifters, try running a motor flush at your next oil change, make sure you read the instructions and use a new filter (cheap one) when doing the flush.

I did my VTC's a while back, and I did the timing chain tensioner when I rebuilt them. I tested the VTC's as indicated in the Service Bulletin with ambiguous results. I also did the timing chain tensioner test, per the bulletin, and I think most of my problem with ticking was due to a bad tensioner that wasn't pumping up.

two things (I have a lifter tick also, VG):
What if I use the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 filter in a 91SE? Will it screw anything up?
Has anyone actually needed to change out their lifters in a VG? I don't think it is a "sticky" lifter because I've ran BG44K motor flush in there before (about 1yr ago), and I still have a tick.

Toyota=VE=VG then VG=Toyota
Now if anyone has done this please drop a line.
