Broken Mani bolt or just a rotten Exhaust?

Before you ask, yes I have searched.

Here's the problem. Yesterday I drove to the bank, got in the drive through line turned off the car as there was a woman next to me apparently doing the banking for half of NC. Hey, gas is 3$ a gallon, yes I turn my car OFF sometimes, what can I say I'm cheap that way. Anyway, when I go to leave there is an immediate exhaust leak that was not there when I turned off the car! It's pretty bad too, almost sounds like my Probe ( gutted cat and straight through muffler LOUD). The leak is definately from the engine compartment, or just below it. So what do you think? Mani bolt, warped Mani with a bad bolt or mabye a rotten exhaust somewhere?

Yeah, a visual inspection is gonna be your only choice here, its only gonna take 5 minutes tops(that includes having to put the hood back up when the struts give out and it hits you on the head.) $3 for gas, where you at?

The problem is either mechanical or electrical in nature.

If it is a manifold stud you should be able to hear/ feel the exhaust leak inside the engine bay. Following your sense of hearing should lead you to the source.

Check around your flex pipe.

Hopefully, it doesn't look like this.

My manifold bolts had moved around so muchthat the head needed retapped because the bolts wouldnt fit back in. I hope it's not that because it was kind of expensive.

mine did that before and one of the metal o-ring gaskets between the manifold and the y-pipe had worn down totally flat. It was something like $3 to replace it.

I have the same problem with my 92 GXE. I took it to a Midas for free estimate, he said it's either missing a manifold bolt or the bolt is broken. He gave me some bs that it would cost too much to check (said they'd have to take the engine out just to look at the bolt hole). It didn't affect the performance, so I just drove it as is since then. has a little throatier sound (but not like every fast'n'furious civic on the road), and sounds awesome in a parking garage. when you first start it you should have enough time to feel around for a leak before it gets too hot. Good luck.

Will a vacum cleaner really work to find a exhaust leak ?

I was thinking of using some fog from a fog machine ...

I don't think I have any leaks and I have a warpspeed y-pipe installed as well because my stocker broke at the "flex section" It sounded awsome though when It was leaking (It was like a straight pipe!!)

Last week I drove my Max in to work and right as I pulled in my Resonator decided to free itself from the cat. The 2 bad things about this were 1. exhaust was WSP from y-pipe back and 3 years old and 2. It happened the day before I traded it in on a new TITAN.
ended up taking it to Midas and getting new exhaust put on for 200.00. was mad but for what I got the TITAN for I cant complain.

GOOD BY Maxima Ill miss you........

Great news!!! well for me anyway. I drove up on the curb to get a better look and it's the flex portion of the exhaust, the last 2 or 3 inches at the rear end are totally eatten away. No main bolts to worry about!

Now then anyone know if warpspeed sells the flex portion with their y pipe? Guess I need to call Dallas and find out. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Ok I know way to bring back a dead thread but, I got an estimate from Mienike, just for the flex pipe, 200$. Looking at warpspeed performance I can get an aluminized steel y pipe that comes with the flex section for 200. Can the install itself be all that hard? I have to get the car inspected in the next month and even my mechanic friend can only cut me just so much slack on the emission portion. What do you think?

Get the WS, its a fairly easy install. But be warned those bolt are going to be a fight if they have never been removed before.

And 200$ wow thats alot.

Yeah, I paid the $200 for a new flex section, ouch. This was back when I bought the car, before I knew about the .org or about the existence of y-pipes. Oh well, live and learn. I've got a new budget y-pipe coming soon.

Our Y pipes dont have a cat converter on them. So any aftermarket pipe is fine, only diffrence to your mecanic and any braindead zombie that works emission check it just looks new. But your mecanic would know its a perfomance part. Also with the Y pipe if you drive normally you'll get better mpg.

Unless they are so rusted that you have to drill the bolts out, otherwise yes lol.

Either way, god luck.

Oh yeah, if you are going to do this I would also suggest having air tools, i couldn't imagine doing it without them.

Hey guys, sorry for hi jacking this thread.. but i know id get **** for starting a random new one.. anyways
I'm thinking of getting a Greddy SP2 catback and I just wanted to get some user
reviews on it, so I thought I'd ask people who have it.. or a different performance exhaust. What's the sound like of the greddy at low rpm and high rpm? Is it a decent growl? Or is it super loud? I'm
looking for something not obnoxious lol.

Thanks alot fellas

u snap the bolts and u will have exhaust leak like crazy from the front or rear exhaust manifold lolz making it sound like **** been there done that with my 91 max when swapping out exhaust systems from my other max to my 91 max lol o well like they say live and learn

i did it by hand its a pain in the rump for reals much better and maybe less risk of snapping the bolts juz make sure before using the air tool to get urself a breaker bar and an extension and break the bolts loose first
