Speedometer problems
Speedometer problems
Hey guys, my speedo has been acting up for a while now. it will just work when it wants to, and if i give it a good smack it will pop on for a minute or so. im thinking its a bad solder joint or somethin, can anyone tell me which one of the connectiors goes to the speedo? or which joints i should check?
thanks guys

Hey dude, I just swapped my cluster from the 125mph to the VEs 145mph like a month ago and the RPMs gauge is just flapping all over the place and only works once in a while too. For me the problem is the cluster itself cuz I tried the original cluster and it works perfectly. I dont know where or what to solder but if you want a quick solution you can just get a new cluster from a JY and exchange the miles on it so you keep your original miles.
hmmm, well im not looking to spend money to fix it, because hopefully ill have something with a sr20det or sr20ve before the end of winter. so i dont really need to fix this i would just like to so i dont have to worry about it shutting off when theres a copy behind me anymore.

"Well if you aint gonna spend no money, that ol'y leaves cha with WD-40"
Take it out of your dash and try to clean it with some compressed air cleaner...wait that cost money (
) just blow on it.Good luck with your SR build, they sure are nice motors.

I bet the engine was worth more than 500 bucks.
EDIT:
Now this engine has problems

Nah its not that, he's my best friend man..its just that he needed money. Here the info so you see what it had and basic info on it. I think someone from the SR20DE forums bought it.

Just to let you know...I have replacement parts for SE and GXE clusters. I can sell you just the circuit board for the cluster, or just the speedo assembly, or just the tach...you get the idea. Let me know if you're interested.
i have the same issue with my speedo, i took mine apart and put it back together and it worked for about 2 weeks and then started dancing again. Ive taken it apart a few times when i needed it to work but it lasts random amounts of time.
Something else i noticed was that a pothole i drove over fixed it for a month.. it was like the huge jolt to the car fixed it and then a month later i ran over a speedbump a bit fast and it hasnt worked properly since. I think i read somewhere that there is a sensor in the engine bay somewhere that could also be causing the speedo probs... Anyone know where it is or what it looks like.
I have a VG30E (aussie model so everything is backwards
) and i dont know a whole bunch about cars.. a pic would be awesome.. with a big red cirdle around what im sposeda look at

Could be a speed sensor
It could be - I had problems with my speedo in the spring. If it got warm outside, speedo would probably not work.
I thought it could have been the speedo head, but people here said it was the speed sensor.
Easy to change - 1 bolt, 1 plug to unplug, pull out of the tranny. Only cost $150 or so [ouch]
Apparently, you can tell if it's the speed sensor or the speedo head that has problems - if the cruise control still works when the speedo reads 0 (and you're moving, of course), then it's the speedo head that has problems. If CC doesn't work, then it's the speed sensor.
Also, I wonder if a bad speed sensor would cause drivability problems ... if the computer uses the speed as one of the inputs...
