Timing belt gone?

For around a month now I'd been hearing a little noise from the passenger side of my engine. Well tonight on my way home, after making a stop I lost lost some power and I heard a LOUD clacking sound from the top left cylinder. I was wondering if when a timing belt goes is it all cylinders that get messed up? If not, what is the likely culprit here? I havent even had time to take off the spark plug to see if there any damage to it. So I guess thats where I'll being.

Thanks in advance

You lost some power, so the car still runs? If it still runs its not the t-belt. To check
pop off the top part of the t-belt cover. Good luck

If the timing belt broke, it is likely that you bent some valves which means new engine or rebuilt because VG are interference engines !

sorry dude but I hope it is not the case !

sounds like it skipped some teeth and only one cylinder's valves are hitting the piston.

Take off the belt cover and take a look as well as at the plugs.

Whens the last time you changed the timing belt?

yea, the car still runs. I've turned it on and off a few times since it happened. The loud clacking seems to only be coming from one of the cylinders (Cylinder #1 I believe)

maybe a rod came loose while it was idling and didnt create a hole in the oil pan..... maybe your belt slipped a tooth.....how many miles you got?

201,xxx miles.... wouldnt any issue with the timing belt affect all the cylinders? The noise is only coming from the #1 cylinder...

Definatly not a broken belt, I'd go with a skipped tooth as mentioned before. bummer.

yes, and I would listen to see if the noise is up top or down.
up top, could be a collapsed lifter.

yea... same here. I had 5 shops look at that sound no one could figure it out. Then finally got it. It was the Timing Belt Tensioner Spring. I was drivin around with that stupid sound for about a yr till got my timing belt and stuff replaced. I had shop do it, but tell them to buy the Timing Belt Relpacement Kit. Its about 400 comes with everything including springs and waterpump and why ur at it put a Under Drive Pulley on it. I put one on mine makes big difference

Good Luck...

When replacing the T-belt, it is always a good idea to at least consider replacing the water pump, belt tensioner, cam seals, etc.

The norm is 60K. Im in the middle of doing it on my 90se, it has 193K miles and it looks a little on the worn side, but still has good tension. Id say it was on a little too long.
