Tighten the steering

I was thinking that the steering could be tighter on my max. I already have Front and rear sways and STB's, new springs and struts, new ball joints, and new control arms....but it still feels like there's too much play in the wheel. Is there nothing you can really do to tighten the steering to make it more "point and go". I was driving my buddies mustang and it was so tight and responsive. I know that both cars are rack and pinion, so what gives? Any clues? Is it the power steering pump or something?

I am not sure but the later maxima's have a sliding force adj. on rack to take out play and try to get rid of some steering vib issues. I will check tomorrow at work and see.

when i bought my car it had a "nismo" steering wheel on it and it is a lot smaller than the stock steering wheel anytime i drive anything else, it feels like im driving a semi your steering won't really be affected but it seems like it?

bigger rims with low profile tires will help response.
alignment, a little toe out will improve turn in response.
pump up your front tire pressures, pressure in the front tires can make a huge difference in steering feel.
smaller steering wheel will definately help the feel.
stiffen up your rear konis
you could also get a lower tie bar

oh the car is def. aligned. I got the lifetime warranty at ntb so I had it done 3 times before I was happy. I have like a degree of toe out right now. Speaking of which Firestone wouldn't even take my car because it was "too low". I think they were just being lazy.

The mustang does have a MUCH smaller steering wheel, come to think of it. So that could be it.

The konis are still pretty stiff....railroad tracks feel like medians.

I'll check tire pressures...the cold weather def made things lower.

I'm talkin to a guy in the classifieds about getting his LTB...if he ever responds. I didn't know those affected steering that much though...but yeah that makes sense, lol.

Does anyone else feel that this is a problem? For example, if I'm driving down the road I can turn the wheel side to side (5 deg each dir.) and the car will hardly move. In his mustang....it felt super stiff and would move as soon as I turned the wheel a degree.

I heard getting a new rack will improve the response, but Im not sure. I know what you mean though. I have way too much play in my steering with many new parts. And the steering is really heavy too. My 93'GXE was really light and smooth

there is a difference between being aligned and being aligned right.
the monkeys at NTB, Firestone, pepboys et al do it to tolerance not to spec.
another thought is rack mounting bushing

My old fully modded ve-5 had very sloppy steering and my new fully modded ve-5 is very tight, I don't know why... If you've replaced evrything and it still is sloppy then maybe a new rack will do the trick.

I actually have the same problem with mine. Mine is super loose lots of play. Couple repair places say I have wrong tires on..? They say I need VR rated tires. But then again that could be there selling point...

This is true....I'm buddies with a couple of the guys at the NTB I went to for the 3rd alignment. I went to the same one twice for the first two...the car wasn't set up for the crown of the road, and the wheel wasn't centered. My buddies gave me a little toe in, compentated for road crown a little bit, and finally made the steering straight. After that and getting the new control arms....there's almost no vibration in the wheel at high speeds.

I'll have to check the rack bushing....hmm
