burnt smell coming through the vent..
hey boys and girls, like i said in the title. this only happened for the a short period of time but it happen everytime i drive the car. so i just want to ask what you guys' opinions are? i'm thinking its the motor but not really sure. it only smell when i turn on the heater. also, i drill a hole through the firewall to hook up my sound system and haven't got a chance to patch it up.
make sure you don't have antifreeze dripping out of your floor vents. does it smell like antifreeze? If so, your heater core may be developing a leak. it's not a fun job, but can be replaced in a day or two of work for about $130 for a new heater core...
If it is that, get it done now before it starts getting colder. if you wait until it blows up completely, you could take out the ECU and ruin your carpet (ask me how I know).
just give things a quick check over and keep an eye on it... and HOPE it is just a funny smell and not your heater core.

If it smells sickly sweet it probably is antifreeze. If it smells acrid and burnt then it probably is oil or hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid, etc.). It doesn't take any volume of fluid to create volumes of this smell. Just drops of oil dripping on the exhaust manifold that won't register on the dipstick.

I have a '90 SE and I know for sure that the heater core is toast (anti-freeze pooling in passenger side floor, smells anti-freeze, etc..). I have a new core and the dash removed and I can touch the heater core but can't figure out how to get the plastic box to open. It sounds like you have done this job, any pointers would be appreciated.
I know it may sound funny but this actually hapenned to my twin brother.
We were at a supper at my dad's and he was talking about some weird smell when he puts his heather on full blast. So after me and my dad were debating at what might cause that, My gf says, out of nowwhere, ``when I put my heather on full blast on my feet, it smells kinda funny, I think it's my rubber carpet that gets hot and smells that`` Well believe it or not, it was my bros problem, he also hasthe same kind of winter rubber carpet.
Anyhow, just thought I would share this and I know this might not be your problem but I find it amusing how sometimes girls just look at things a different way !
