Faulty Gas Gauge!?!?!

So I noticed my gas milage wasn't too good lately (Just judging from how fast it ran out on the gauge) Rather than filling it all the way up, driving some, then filling it back up and dividing how many miles I drove by the amount of gas I used.

But anyway, long story short.... went to the gas station and the gas gauge said it was well below a quarter of a tank (Almost to the E) But when I filled it up I only got 13.6 gallons to a full tank. So that means there was still nealy 5 gallons left? Assuming my tank has an 18.5 gallon tank.

Soo... maybe the reason I'm not getting good gas milage is because the gauge is wrong!

Is there any way to reset it, or get a new sensor/ something that senses how much gas is left? Because once it gets lower than a quarter of a tank, I don't know how much gas I have left!

Any responses are appreciated..

Did some searching and could not find ANY maxima's with below the 18.5 Gallon fuel tank. I got 320 miles on the trip and am a little below quarter of a tank now. (Majority highway driving + some *******)

Could be the fuel-sending unit may need to be replaced.

BTW, does anybody know what the factory estimated mpg was when new?

VE A/T = 19/26 same as my montana

it sounds like your gauge works like every other cars fuel gauge. they all are in accurate like that.

the same thing was happening to my 90 max with a 13.5 gallon tank may I add and when I went to clear instrument cluster from my dark one, it was gone. Maybe an easy junk fix

From some of the MPG testing I have done in another thread, I have noticed that above the 3/4 tank you can get many more miles on the gauge (like 80 on a 330 mile tank). From the 3/4 to 1/2 mark you still get a lot of miles (60), below the 1/2 mark your gauge will fall fast and you won’t get as many miles (1/2 to E is 90 miles.)
And those tests were repeated many times with very consistent driving style/conditions, so it is clearly based on what Automart said.

My advise is to drive right all the time, gives you like a 1/8 tank increase in gas.

all my maximas have never taken more then about 13.5gal before they are full. My mom owned my first one for 6 years and same thing. I think there and unusable amout of any gas tank and for maximas its missing ~5 gal.

Also we both noticed the similar patteren as well, with it falling faster with below 1/2 a tank.

mine drops normally to 3/4 of a tank (after around 100kms) then it drops to 1/2 after 20km/s then it drops to 1/4 after about 80kms and stays there for about 100km before it starts to drop again. I get around 400 - 450km before it reads empty but i still have about 10L left.

my empty fuel light does not work i found that out the hard way lol
