question

my sister has a 98 extera with a 3.3 liter v6 the same as the max or very simular. so my my question is does it have a timing chain or a belt. The dealer wanted to chang the timing belt because it has 90k miles on it. I have a 2k make and im 99% sure that it has a chain but i just wanted to make sure.

the xterra has a VG33E, which has a timing belt. your max has a VQ30DE which has a timing chain.

You better get that belt changed soon. Its not too bad a job as long as you have to tools. I just did it on my max and its the same setup.

Yes. All VGs have the timing belt. The recommended interval to change it is every 60k miles I'm pretty sure. It's actually the first job I did on my Max, because my water pump had gone bad and leaked all over my original timing belt. I think they also recommend that you change the water pump, thermostat, tensioner, main seal and front cams seals while you're in there in order to save time and money (from having to go back in later). Good luck!

The Nissan Xterra didn't come out until the year 2000. Do you mean a 1998 Pathfinder? Those had the 3.3L V6.
